WoodWing Software's New Smart Speller Provides Industry's Best Spelling Functionality

Press release from: WoodWing Software

ZAANDAM, THE NETHERLANDS (August 9, 2006) — WoodWing Software™ has introduced Smart Speller™, a powerful new tool that adds the enhanced spelling functionality of the renowned language institute *TALŌ® to Adobe® InDesign® and InCopy® CS2.

WoodWing officials said that Smart Speller offers tremendous improvements to the spelling provided by InDesign and InCopy.

“The spelling modules created by the *TALŌ institute are the best in the world,” said Erik Schut, President of WoodWing Software™. “By incorporating *TALŌ’s technology into Smart Speller, we’ve been able to create the industry’s most powerful, efficient and versatile speller. People are going to be extremely impressed when they see what an improvement this is over the standard spelling that comes with InDesign and InCopy.”

In addition to delivering enhanced spelling functionality for languages that are available in standard InDesign and InCopy, Smart Speller also covers a wide variety of additional languages, including Bulgarian, Croatian, Australian English and many others.

Schut said that the benefits of Smart Speller include:

Accuracy: Smart Speller supplies the user with proper alternatives no matter what the language.

Completeness: Smart Speller’s lexicons are at least 4 times larger then usual and include recent idiom. Some languages have lexicons over or near to 3 million real words.

Speed: The basic principles of the *TALŌ modules guarantee an economical spelling procedure.

Efficiency: Smart Speller has the ability to immediately and automatically learn unknown words, while outdated words are forgotten.

Versatility: It has the ability to switch between languages at any moment during a spelling session.

Updates: New features will be added each year.

Aad Droogh, WoodWing’s Technical Product Manager for Smart Speller, said the architecture of the *TALŌ spelling modules is what makes Smart Speller™ such an efficient and powerful tool.

“Most spellers on the market are based on the permutation or the trigram method,” Droogh explained. “What this means is that it’s beyond the reach of many spellers to include in their lexicons every compound that appears. Their lexicons mainly consist of roots of words that are meant to be combined with each other. The resulting combinations are applied blindly, leading to spelling errors without the user’s approval. These spellers skip misspelled words and the user is not aware of his mistakes.”

“Those problems, Droogh said, are eliminated with Smart Speller”.

Smart Speller follows the rules and exceptions of spelling governed by leading academies, Droogh said. Therefore, abbreviations, punctuation marks, fixed formats and financial data (such as dates and numbers), and Internet addresses are controlled during the spelling process.

Another benefit of Smart Speller, Droogh noted, is its memory. “It has a memory that contains words, such as the user’s mistakes or unique, differently spelled words,” he said. “The function of its memory for a whole company or separated business units could be its favorite style; words are collected in separated lexicons for each user or server. Smart Speller has this learning ability, making it very convenient for anyone to use.”

Spelling changes (for example, between leading academies or between American and British English) are an option, too. The user can create and implement his favorite style.

WoodWing officials said that Smart Speller is just one more tool that will make life easier for any company that uses InDesign and InCop®.

“We recently introduced Smart Hyphen, which uses the modules of the *TALŌ institute to provide the best, most accurate hyphenation on the market,” said Brian Kruger, CEO of WoodWing USA. “Now, along with Smart Speller, people who use InDesign and InCopy have two very powerful tools at their disposal. These are terrific additions to WoodWing’s line of editorial solutions.”
