Art for Concern will hold its fifth exhibition of Traditional and Folk Art (TAFA) in Delhi to showcase indigenous art forms from artists and master craftsmen from across India in mid-May. The aim of the show is to help preserve and protect India’s artistic heritage and ensure that the legacy and splendour of these traditional art forms endures. The show brings to you an array of artworks from across India. These include Pichwais and Phads from Rajashtan, striking Chola bronzes from Tamil Nadu, Mata ni Pachedis from Gujarat and Sanjhi Paper Art.
The Traditional and Folk Art Show is organised by Secure Giving Events. The proceeds of the show will go to grassroots programmes that work on social development programs.
Anjana Khanna, Head of Art for Concern says, “In their myriad forms, these traditional art forms serve as essential documentation of India’s longstanding cultural heritage. Their legacy is not to be ignored. We at Art for Concern launched TAFA with the specific intent of bringing unique, regional artworks to buyers across India. Over the years, it has become a landmark show for patrons looking to select the finest and most authentic works of India’s extensive art culture, and also benefit underprivileged communities while doing so”.
Art for Concern added TAFA to its portfolio in 2014 when it realised that many of India’s traditional, regional art forms were slowly dying out, due to a lack of patronage. This trend was forcing many exceptional artists and master craftsmen to look for alternative means of income, with the result that their work threatened to become a thing of the past. Art for Concern, along with DBS Bank, is delighted to help to revive these art forms and preserve their legacy and grace for generations to come.
About the Art Forms
Pichwai: A form of traditional Rajasthani fabric painting that decorates temple walls behind the idol of Shrinathji. The word Pichwai derives from the Sanskrit words ‘pich’ (back) and ‘wais’ (hanging). Each painting personifies Shrinathji as a prince with jewels, surrounded by his ‘gopis’ or milkmaids.
Phad: In Rajasthan, the large paintings that portray the epic lives of local folk heroes and demi-gods are known as Phad paintings. They represent complex folk narratives, achieved through their specific styles. These paintings form a visual backdrop to all night storytelling performances.
Chola Bronze: These are exquisite sculptures made out of bronze. The figures are moulded using beeswax and oil, coated with clay and baked using dried cow dung. The wax then flows out leaving an empty mould, into which molten bronze is poured. Once that cools and hardens, the details are crafted.
Mata Ni Pachedi: Mata ni Pachedi means ‘behind the Mother Goddess’ and is a cloth that depicts a temple of the Goddess. When the nomadic Vaghari community was barred from entering temples, they made their own shrines with depictions of the Mother Goddess on cloth. The paintings usually have a set pattern, with the Mother Goddess dominating the central area surrounded by deities and commoners worshipping her.
Sanjhi Paper Art: Sanjhi art is the traditional art of stencilling. Sanjhi painting flourished in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. Legend has it that this art form originated with Radhe, who made Sanjhi rangolis using natural colours, along with flowers, leaves and coloured stones, to woo Lord Krishna. This form of art is considered to be one of the finest forms of spiritual expression.
