Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are systems that operate without a human pilot and are deployed for various underwater missions. Unlike ROVs, AUVs are robots that do not require operator input. The history of AUVs dates to 1957 when the first AUV Self-Propelled Underwater Research Vehicle (SPURV) was developed at the Applied Physics Laboratory of University of Washington, with funding from the US Office of Naval Research (ONR). It could operate at a maximum depth of about 11,800 feet and had a speed of 4-5 knots for almost four hours. It was powered by a combination of zinc cells and solid-state converters. The US Navy used SPURV to study submarine wakes. Since then, AUVs have evolved significantly in design and are being adopted for a variety of applications.
