PMR report

The Russian telecoms market increased by 4% year-on-year in 2009. However, this is growth as measured in the local currency. Due to the strong weakening of the Russian ruble in the crisis period, in euro terms the market experienced a double digit decline. Among the specific characteristics of the Russian telecoms market have always been the significant regional differences in the development of the services and the gap between urban and rural areas of the country. Most significant is the difference in the ISP market segment. Moscow remains the biggest regional telecommunication market in Russia, accountable for almost one third of total industry revenues. The crisis and investment cuts of operators implemented in 2009 even strengthened the trend.
Nevertheless the crisis will not be here forever. Encouraged by the improvement of macroeconomic forecasts already in Q1 2010 telecom operators declared a recovery of their investment programmes and we expect that in 2011 this will impact positively on the industry. It is also clear that an area of further growth is in regional expansion and in the development of new services, including IP TV, broadband internet and different applications based on data transmission.
We should also keep in mind that Russian regulatory bodies and the government will continue to have a crucial impact on the market’s further development. One of their latest decisions was a condition that operators should use domestically produced equipment for the development of digital TV, WiMAX and LTE networks. Consequently, if the government launches planned tenders for LTE networks in 2010 this will definitely influence the level of investment of mobile operators.

Today’s economy requires businesses to keep close tabs on market activity in order to make sound decisions and maximize profits. If you’re looking for the absolute newest and most viable data and analysis on the Russian telecommunication market issues, you should read the latest PMR report Telecommunications market in Russia 2010.
