Press release from: American Academy in Berlin

Berlin (May 8, 2008) - George H. W. Bush will be the recipient of the annual Henry A. Kissinger Prize, the American Academy in Berlin announced today. The award ceremony will take place on July 3, 2008.

Former President Bush and Dr. Kissinger will both attend. The award will be presented by the Chairman of the American Academy in Berlin, Richard C. Holbrooke. “I am profoundly moved that former President Bush will receive this award,” Dr. Kissinger said. “No one outside Germany did more to assist Germany in the critical period when the Wall fell and unification became a possibility. I look forward to being with President Bush in Berlin on this wonderful occasion”.

The Henry A. Kissinger Award is annually bestowed upon an internationally renowned American or European in honor of his or her outstanding service to the transatlantic relationship. The 2007 inaugural recipient was former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt. The award is conferred in the spirit of Henry Kissinger’s initiatives for a stronger transatlantic relationship during and after the Cold War.

The American Academy thanks Ambassador C. Boyden Gray for generously underwriting this evening.
