Human Rights by Spanish mime actor Carlos Martínez

Human Rights by Spanish mime actor Carlos Martínez

For 25 years Spanish mime actor Carlos Martínez has been performing throughout Europe, dedicating much of his work to the topic of Human Rights. The technique of mime has allowed the actor to cross not only language barriers but also to bring fresh glimpses into the reality behind the words of this important declaration.

Different disciplines in the arts such as painting, theatre, comics, advertising, poetry and music, are embracing imaginative education in order to provoke reflection and action on Human Rights. As a mime, Carlos Martínez wanted to take part in this on-going effort by embarking on the challenge of converting texts into movements and gestures; substituting words for muscles, tendons and joints; joining ideas with emotion. And finally, gently seasoning it all with irony and humour.

The fourteen pieces in his Human Rights programme are engaging but also thought provoking. Some scenes are easy to assimilate, while others are more layered. However, each of them is a silent voice that joins many solidary voices in continuing to denounce the violation of human rights around the world.

After a successful premiere in Geneva in 2004, the show was eventually recorded in Stuttgart (Germany) in front of a live audience in order to produce the DVD "Human Rights" which is already being distributed in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, UK and Italy.

Due to the 60th anniversary of the declaration of Human Rights in December 2008, Carlos Martínez is going to perform his international theatre show about the human rights several times in theatres in Europe this year.
