Frida Kahlo: la Tehuana

After four weeks Winter break, on February 4th 2012 the Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund in Baden-Baden opens again with the continuation of the exhibition “Frida Kahlo: Viva La Vida”.
During the month of February the Museum will show an additional exhibition “Frida la Tehuana”, dedicated to the famous Tehuana dresses Frida Kahlo used to wear and to paint.

These dresses are composed of a blouse (called “Huipil”) and a long skirt, which the women of the isthmus of Tehuantepec used to wear. The isthmus of Tehuantepec is in the southern part of Mexico and separates the Atlantic from the Pacific Ocean.
Such dresses were perfect for Frida Kahlo, on one hand Frida Kahlo was fascinated by the symbolism of the dresses and identified herself with the Tehuana women known to be strong, independent and self-confident.
On the other hand the Huipil was especially attractive on her figure highlighting her small shoulders and thin waist. The long skirt of the Tehuana dresses kept her impaired legs covered, and the width of the full skirt gave her freedom of movement and elegance.

The Tehuana dresses shown in the Frida Kahlo exhibition are original from Tehuantepec and are 70 to 80 years old.

To complete the “Frida la Tehuana” exhibition, several pieces of jewellery are shown originated in Oaxaca (Mexico); these are handcrafted gold-filigree earrings and necklaces. The most special exhibit is a set composed of a gold necklace and a pair of earrings in the shape of a peacock. A similar specimen can be seen in the Museum of Anthropology of Mexico City.

The exhibition “Frida la Tehuana” will lasts till February 29th 2012, and it is in addition to the permanent exhibition Frida Kahlo: Viva La Vida” which shows 116 oil paintings of the Mexican artist. The Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund is a privately owned monographic art museum founded in 2008. The Kunstmuseum exhibits only the works of Frida Kahlo. The objective of the Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund is to offer the visitors a complete view of the entire work of the Mexican artist, thus allowing to follow Kahlo’s development, to discover the different phases she goes through in her life: from the very early works to her maturity.
The Vision of the Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund is to offer the visitors a unique cultural experience that covers all the senses, and an environment that touches not only the eyes of the visitors, but their minds, and above all their hearts.
Every decision made in the creation of the museum was driven by two elements:
respect for the visitors and respect for the artists.

In addition to exhibit the artworks, the Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund shows the cultural and historical environment of Frida Kahlo’s life and times in Mexico: Tehuana Huipiles (blouses) and dresses, jewelry, pre-columbian scupltures, Mexican votive paintings and the entire context in which the artist lived and produced her work. This 360°view of Kahlo’s life and work allows the visitors to totally immerse themselves into the artworks and to better understand the artist and the Mexican history and culture.

The founders of the Art Museum are Hans-Jürgen Gehrke and Prof. Dr. Mariella C. Remund. Both are art patrons, collectors, and passionate art historians.
They have spent over 25 years in executive positions in multinational corporations and academic organizations in Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, USA, Spain, Mexico, South America and China.
