The exhibition "The Revolution in service of poetry" offers an alternative to the internationally established yet static Berliner Kunstherbst. It brings three of Spain's most influential and important critical artists to Berlin-Kreuzberg: Fernando Sánchez Castillo, Democracia und Santiago Sierra.

"...so the revolution is also a matter of poetry, a matter of style."

Off the beaten paths of the Kunstherbst, works by three of Spain's most politically active artists will be shown at the Senatsreservenspeicher in Kreuzberg as well as in public spaces in Berlin, starting September 8th.
The artists are well-known for their outspoken and critical works, which uncompromisingly reveal the social injustices of our time. Here-and for the first time, together- they examine the area between revolution and aesthetics. Looking at the topics which currently dominate the headlines of the press, the subject of the exhibition could not be more relevant to the current situation: it covers the reflection of social transformations, revolutionary aesthetic in the media and the relationship between power, art and the economy.

"The Revolution in service of poetry" offers a glimpse of the artists existing oeuvre by showing older works as well as new ones which will be created especially for this exhibition. Next to photography, sculptures and works on film, new pieces will be created as installations and performance art. These will be specific to certain situations in public spaces or the Senatsreservenspeicher or they will expand on themes of already existing pieces. During the course of the exhibition, the artists will react to their environment, will expand the exhibition space and extend their radius of action into the city´s space. They will search for access to and communication with the public. Some of the works will interfere with the public space, everyday life and the social sphere; they will resemble a "poetry sprung into action."

"We understand this project less as an exhibition with static products for the art market and more as an open-ended experiment which will develop as it steps into people´s everyday life and communication", say the exhibition´s curators Ulf Saupe and Lutz Henke. On the one hand, "The Revolution in service of poetry", in its non-commercial, dynamic and critical conception, represents a counterpart to the world of galleries and art fairs. On the other hand, art can´t survive outside of that same system. It is a part of the communication and negotiation of the balance of power.

In the context of the exhibition, a symposium will take place at the Instituto Cervantes (9/23), as well as a public screening of Santiago Sierra´s film „NO, Global Tour“ statt (9/17). Accompanying the exhibition, Artitude e.V. will issue a newspaper and, in an artist´s edition, a portfolio with five silkscreens. This will include the first edition in print by Santiago Sierra to date.

The artists will be in Berlin during the course of the exhibition. Fernando Sánchez Castillo, Democracia and the curators are available for interviews.
Please contact us for detailed information on press conferences, the program details, photo shoots and interview dates.

The exhibition is curated by Ulf Saupe and Lutz Henke. It is made possible by the Embassy of Spain. The project is under the patronage of the Spanish Ambassador, H.E.Rafael Dezcallar. The project will be conducted by the Kreuzberg-based art association Artitude e.V.

Address by the Spanish Ambassador, H.E.Rafael Dezcallar, followed by a reception.
Times: 9/9 - 10/3, Wed-Sun, 2 p.m.- 8 p.m.

Fernando Torres' disappointing and misguided public threat
Last week I criticized Steven Gerrard for failing to provide public support for Rafa. Since then, a host of players have backed the Spaniard, including Peter Crouch and John Arne Riise. There is a fine line though between moderate public support and holding the club to ransom, and Fernando Torres has crossed that line. Torres’ latest comments are quite simply unacceptable and come at a time when the Benitez/Hicks storm seemed
