Jamnalal Bajaj School of Legal Studies Banasthali Intra - Moot Court Competition

Faculty of Law, Jamnalal Bajaj School of Legal Studies, Banasthali Vidyapith organized Intra Moot Court Competition 2019 for the first year students during February & March 2019. The moot problem was on Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The finals for the same took place on 31 Mar 2019.

The word "moot" is said to originate from a Scandinavian word meaning simply a meeting and the meetings concerned were assemblies of the members of a community for legislative or judicial purposes. The word took its present meaning in the English Inns of Court in the sixteenth century where law students would present their legal arguments on a given set of factual circumstances (often resembling real cases) before one or several senior lawyers or judges. Aspiring lawyers gain experience in the art of persuasion, without having to gain such experience at the risk of inadvertently damaging a real client's interests.

For the prize distribution function, Prof. Subhash Sharma alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and University of Southern California who had authored the book Management in New Age Western Windows Eastern Doors was the Chief Guest and Prof. B R Natarajann, Head, Dept of Chemical Engg, Banasthali Vidyapith was the Guest of Honor. Prof. Harsh Purohit, Dean, Faculty of Law gave the welcome address and Ms. Rashmi Singh Rana, Head, Dept of Legal Studies gave the vote of thanks.

Prof. Sharma mesmerized the audience with the step by step song, engaging all in the moot court room. He talked about three special initiatives for success, the first VISA reflecting Vision, Strategy and Action, the second being becoming ordinary to extra-ordinary by doing EXTRA every day, and SWAN model connoting Strength, Weakness, Achievement and Next Step.

Winner's Trophy was bagged by team Mansi Chahar B.B.A.,LL.B., Naincy Chauhan B.B.A.,LL.B., and Kanika Goel B.Com.,LL.B. The Runner Up team included three students Ranu Sharma, Ishita Jain and Shubhangini Mishra all from B.Com.,LL.B. Best Speaker Award went to Shubhangini Mishra B.Com.,LL.B. Best Memorial Award went to Shelly Varshney, Divisha Rathore and Srasti Tripathi all from B.A.,LL.B. I Year. Mahima Upadhyay B.Com.,LL.B bagged the Best Researcher Award.

Reiterating the quote of Bill Gates “Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning” and the significance of celebrating consumer day on 15 March, Prof. Natarajan explained the importance of moot court competitions in law colleges and how they help an aspiring law student to become a successful advocate.

The students and faculty who participated in the Moot Court Competition at Banasthali left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a jewel in the crown among the women’s universities not only in India today but across the globe.
