CheapTents - its not all about tents

With the Public Bodies Bill (in the UK) currently going through parliament it came to light that not only have the Tory-led British government decided it will sell off the 15% of uk forestry it is entitled to do (as long as it buys other land for the public good) but it would also sell off the remaining 85% of UK forestry land. This of course is something that has enraged the UK public and for good reason.

The selling / leasing of the forestry will (in it's current form) mean less public access, no security for biodiversity and carbon storage, a one-off fee with no previsions for safe keeping or onus to look after the forest. The proposals state that management of the forestry should in the first instance be taken by charities and local groups, however with a huge cost attached (yeh something the tories seem to miss in each debate) for buying the forest ... if a charity can't afford it (i don't know any who can, nor community) then corporations will be allowed to buy it... yes that is right they are privatising the forests of this great land and restricting your access!

Today in the first of a series of posts about the Save Our Forest Campaign ( http://bit.ly/saveourforest1 ), Andy at CheapTents has sat down with Arlene McCarthy North West MEP and Labour Representative to talk about the Public Bodies Bill. In the interview they discuss what Arlene thinks, is doing and where labour stand on this important matter to the general public.
