Author Madeleine Herrmann To Be Featured In 50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading

Madeleine Herrmann was recently chosen to be featured in '50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading'. The book is produced by The Authors Show. She was chosen as the result of her release entitled 'Partita - A Psychological Mystery'.

Partita is a psychological mystery as complex as the extraordinary violin solo music by Bach. Ernst Feidler, a brilliant linguist psychologist and violinist, commits a shocking and unexplainable suicide at the height of his career. His devastated wife, Manou, is left to raise their four children and piece together the hidden motives behind the death of her beloved Ernst. The iconoclastic European couple rode the intense post World War II world into the cultural upheavals of the 1960s with tireless energy. Through Manou's progressively deeper scrutiny of their life, she unveils his descent into psychosis and her own participation in his decline. Finally, she gives birth to a new self without him.

Herrmann, 80, has lived in Taos since her retirement in 1991. She says she writes when she’s inspired and is working to complete a second novel about romance, idealism and relationships.

Born in Lyon, France, Herrmann lived during World War II in German-occupied Nantes, where repeated U.S. bombing occurred. After the war, she became an athlete who won French national track-and-field titles and competed in the University World Games in Budapest in 1949.

She earned admission to a school in Paris and studied physical education, which she notes was a rare course of study for women then. Out of 800 applicants only 40 students were enrolled in the Ecole Normale Superieure, where Madeleine entered number 1. After two years she won a Fulbright scholarship to study physical education in Iowa.

“The war darkly colored my parents’ attitude about life — made them rather gloomy even after it was all over — so I came to America to try to reinvent myself,” she says.

In Iowa she met Fred Herrmann, her future husband, who had been recruited into the Hitler Youth in Germany as had all young men of his age in those times, but he was never called to serve, she says. Defying historic animosity between the French and Germans, they bonded and moved to California to pursue the American Dream.

Herrmann had her four children by the time she was 27 and earned a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1962. She taught women’s physical fitness, but primarily taught French at public schools in California, she says. She went back to college in 1983 for a master’s program in transpersonal psychology, which studies higher states of consciousness and the intersection of psychology and spirituality, according to the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology. A few years later, in 1986, her book of French poetry was published, which she says she intends someday to translate into English.
