mobile web 2.0 - For many Americans, Craigslist is the first place to turn to when they want get rid of unwanted bits and bobs, or if they are on a bargain hunt. Market research company Alexa includes Craigslist among the ten most frequently visited Internet sites in America - ranging together with Yahoo, Google, Myspace or Youtube.

For a long time, Craigslist was a local service in San Francisco, but in the year 2000 success prompted Newmark to expand to other cities such as Chicago and New York. Further locations were added at an ever more rapid rate, including overseas, and today Craigslist exists in 450 cities across 50 countries. In November alone, there were 135 additions in one go.

In seven American cities, job offers are not free, but cost up to 75 Dollars. In New York, apartment ads cost 10 Dollars, but only if they are placed by real estate agents.

Yet the turnover of the company is little, compared to revenue that newspaper publishers lose because of Craigslist. A study by sector newsletter Classified Intelligence Report came to the conclusion that major newspapers were losing a revenue of 50 million Dollars to Craigslist in the San Francisco region alone. Buckmaster claims that such amounts are exaggerated and their sympathy has its limits: "Newspapers are still doing an enormous business with classifieds." Maybe it's not growing any more, but it's still pretty stable."
