Lehmann audio's Black Cube Statement will be used for quality control at Ortofon's production facility in Nakskov/Denmark

(Cologne, Nov. 02nd 2006) The Danish traditional company Ortofon, the world’s most significant producer of turntable pickup systems, has ordered electronic devices exclusively from Cologne-based specialist manufacturer Lehmann for their quality control in Nakskov, Denmark. The equipment used, a Black Cube Statement, is the entry-level phono preamp that was presented by Lehmann audio at the High End 2006. This model already lived up to the high expectations by the Danish hightech company as to high-quality electronics.

Leif Johannsen, head of Ortofon’s acoustics & technology department: "The long-term stability and working reliability which Lehmann audio is known for were the crucial factor in our decision to use the units for this application. Furthermore, the Black Cube Statement is also a real bargain."

Several Black Cube Statement models will be fine-tuned at Ortofon’s to the specific requirements of the Danes. Using a custom-designed relay control, Ortofon’s production manager Kim Pedersen is going to implement a remote control for the jumper-selectable functions inside the units plus the other settings that are accessible via DIP switches. This relay matrix will then be addressed by the Labview software. With the new system, MM as well as MC pickup systems will be checked. Forty people are employed at the Ortofon production in Nakskov alone.

>Company portrait Lehmann audio

Lehmann audio offers high-quality hifi electronics under the slogan 'High End by an Audio Engineer’. Lehmann develops and manufactures exclusively in Germany. With no exception, his products get very good reviews in the specialist press and are available through national distributors in thirty countries on all five continents.

One of Lehmann audio’s special domains are phono preamps. Here alone, his product portfolio comprises half a dozen devices from 300,- EUR up to 3.000,- EUR. Yet also the headphone amplifiers have long become established with music lovers and professionals and are used, among others, by Holland’s most experienced independent mastering engineer, Maarten de Boer from 'The Masters', and by the German audiophile record label TACET for a critical sonic evaluation. In September 2005 the Black Cube Linear was used by Sennheiser and the ARD for high-quality presentations at the IFA in Berlin. For an exhibition at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, no less than seven units had been installed at very critical audio-monitoring stations.

Lehmann convinces his customers by trustworthiness, quality and a fair value for the money. This way he is successful against the trend in a branch where the enormous speed of technical progress often lacks continuity and up-to-date relevance.

Since 1988 Lehmann has developed high-quality sound equipment for studio and hifi applications in small quantities under his name. His motto is to make music an experience by means of first-class technology. As a qualified sound engineer who is familiar with different aspects of studio electronics and seeks a creative dialogue with the highend scene, Norbert Lehmann was able to develop sound-relevant 'tricks and dodges'.

The fact that Lehmann generates more than fifty percent of his turnover in Germany shows that he has successfully filled a gap and confirms his work.

>Company portrait Ortofon

Ortofon is the undisputed world market leader in turntable cartridges and much respected by consumers, press and industry specialists. The foundation for this are top-level achievements in the fields of R&D and technological competence, based on expert knowledge in acoustics, material science and electronics.

Pickups and components are produced exclusively at the company headquarters in Nakskov, Denmark, using automated and semi-automated production facilities including manual work by highly skilled specialists. This ensures a high and constant manufacturing quality of all Ortofon products.

The pickups are distributed worldwide through a network of 60 importers and company-owned distributing subsidiaries in the USA and Japan.

Ortofon has about 75 employees in Denmark plus another ten in Japan and the USA. In 2004, this group turned over 14 million euros.

Already since their foundation days, Ortofon has been dealing with high-quality sound reproduction. When the company was established in Copenhagen in 1918, the focus lay at first on the technical realization of movie sound tracks in the so-called photographic sound recording process. The first moving coil (MC) pickup system for turntables was developed in 1948.

In 1979 the famous Concorde design was created which earned the company an industry design award and which is still shown at the Danish Design Centre as an example of Danish industrial design.

Until 1985 Ortofon’s main focus lay on the hifi sector. The advent of the CD, however, saw markedly decreasing sales figures of turntables and hence of turntable cartridges, too. Although the digital market has grown substantially in the meantime, analogue music reproduction is still in great demand. Especially hifi enthusiasts striving for a realistic reproduction do prefer analogue technology.

As a consequence of the introduction of the CD, Ortofon also started the development and production of pickup systems during the mid 1980s’ that were specifically designed for the discotheque market. Pretty soon Ortofon’s leading-edge experience and technology saw a broad acceptance of those products for club, hip-hop and scratch music. Due to an ongoing and consistent quality improvement, Ortofon is now the world’s market leader both in the hifi sector and in professional systems alike.

Ortofon is the exclusive sponsor of DMC International and DJ Qbert. DMC is the international organizer of competitions for DJs and their creative talents of handling turntables. The cooperation with QBert also comprises common product developments. In addition to their worldwide sponsoring payments, Ortofon also supports national events in cooperation with the respective distributors.

With the onset of the 1990s’ Ortofon could benefit from their experience gained in the pickup production. New business fields such as acoustical rubber components, specialized coil production and manufacturing services were opened up. The clientele of these comes mainly from the spheres of medical engineering and hearing aid acoustics.

In 2004 the company was taken over by the current owners, a group of private investors. Ortofon’s firm strategy is to push ahead the company’s development by continuous investments in the pickup and components sectors.
