Press release from: Bay Bay's Kids & All Sports Foundation

SAN ANTONIO – For many years, San Antonio has endured a reputation as one of the nation’s fattest cities, ranking as high as 2nd (behind Las Vegas) in a 2007 survey. But that status is gradually changing, as the city is moving down in the rankings, thanks in part to the efforts of fitness professionals like BAY BAY MCCLINTON, and events such as BOOT CAMP: THE FITNESS CHALLENGE.

MCCLINTON, the founder of BAY BAY’S KIDS & ALL SPORTS FOUNDATION, introduced BOOT CAMP to the San Antonio area in 2008. Despite an initial postponement due to Hurricane Ike, the first annual event proved a success, attracting nearly 100 participants and spectators, plus the attention of local media. Participants from Triton Sports Center praised the event for helping raise awareness of health and fitness issues, with one team member saying that “if we can get good habits starting young, by all means, I support that”; DRILL SGT. HARVEY WALDEN, IV [RET.], star of VH1’s hit reality series Celebrity Fit Club, helped put the teams through their paces in the 2008 BOOT CAMP, and calls it “a great way to inspire kids and families to get up and get serious about a healthy lifestyle.”

Explaining the concept of BOOT CAMP, MCCLINTON says, “It’s a competition for teams of fitness professionals and enthusiasts, primarily independent trainers, people from area gyms, and law enforcement professionals. We bring them together and put them through a series of events designed to test their strength, endurance, and fitness.” MCCLINTON and WALDEN will reprise their roles from 2008 and will guide the teams as celebrity coaches and color commentators.

This year’s BOOT CAMP will mark the culmination of a whirlwind fitness tour for WALDEN, who will also appear at two area H-E-B stores on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6 to sign copies of his best-selling book, Harvey Walden’s No Excuses! Fitness Workout. Walden will appear at the BOERNE H-E-B (420 W BANDERA RD) at 10:15 AM; at 4 PM, he will appear at the UNIVERSAL CITY H-E-B (910 KITTY HAWK).

The next day (SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7), WALDEN and MCCLINTON will return to the site of 2008’s BOOT CAMP, DON STRANGE RANCH (103 WARING WELFARE ROAD [exit 533 off I-10 West], BOERNE, TX 78006), to host this year’s event, which will take place from 8 AM – 2 PM. In addition to the FITNESS CHALLENGE, the ranch will host a HEALTH & FITNESS AREA, featuring an inflatable obstacle course for kids, healthy snacks, and tips and information on healthy lifestyles.

Anyone who feels up to the challenge of competing can register by contacting MCCLINTON at 210.385.7660.

For MCCLINTON, the mission and appeal of BOOT CAMP are as simple as setting the right example. “One of the reasons we started BOOT CAMP was to motivate kids and families to pursue a healthy lifestyle,” he explains. “And we had such a great response from everyone who attended and participated in last year’s event that this year, we’re making it even bigger and better!”

“I’d love to see all of you out at DON STRANGE RANCH on the 7th,” says WALDEN. “If you’re a trainer or an athlete, put a team together and sign up. If you’re a kid, bring your family to the ranch; if you’re a parent, bring your kids. It’s going to be a great time, and a great workout, so ‘no excuses’ – let’s get out there and help get San Antonio from the fattest to the fittest!”
