Gypsie - Rideshare for Travelers.

Gypsie - Rideshare for Travelers.

Kiwi startup Gypsie.co.nz have created a simple to use website that matches empty seats in cars with people looking to go somewhere. There are literally tens of thousands of empty seats moving around NZ every day.
We are really focusing on the young traveler market as they are constantly moving and faced with a travel provider decision every few days, they are also very price conscious and social.
Ridesharing provides travelers who have bought or hired a vehicle to lower their costs of travel by making a seat or two available for parts of their trip around New Zealand. Gypsie.co.nz focus on long inter-city trips.
Many travelers hire or buy a van, then spend a month or two traveling our awesome country without meeting anybody, there are many posts on social media for these drivers looking to meet up with other people. Unfortunately a social media post about a ride offer or request can be a very time consuming business with either lots or no messages half conveyed without any guarantee that the other party in the agreement will even show up on the day.
Gypsie structure this agreement.
Considering the large volume of travelers in NZ just over 150,000 per year in the young traveler backpacker segment per year staying an average of 30 nights (*Tourism Nz) there are a lot of people getting around NZ, and we hope to make ridesharing an ecologically sensible , affordable, flexible, and much more social and fun alternative to the traditional methods of bus or plane transport, or hitchhiking; which is really a big thing for backpackers in NZ!
A common misconception is that ridesharing drivers are just there to make profit, this is not the case with Gypsie.co.nz, we are a cost sharing service and we suggest realistic prices based on distance and the amount of people traveling. Rideshare drivers don't make a profit they distribute the cost of the trip.
Ridesharing is super social, you look online at profiles, images, ratings and references and select someone you think you would enjoy sharing a few hours in a car with then you agree the ride and go, a long trip can get the people in the vehicle knowing each other very well so it is a very personal experience where great friendships can be made. Experiences are better when shared!
Many destinations in New Zealand are a bit off the beaten track and can be quite difficult to reach with planes and buses only going a part of the way... this can be quite time consuming and expensive in search cost and money, this is a big issue for time poor and low budget travelers , as it is for locals. With rideshare it is common that these hard to reach places are exactly where the driver is going anyway.
The sharing economy has boomed in the last ten years with big companies such as taskrabbit, uber and airbnb becoming very large international businesses by creating value from underutilised resources. Ridesharing has real ecological value, we really hope to reduce the amount of vehicles on the roads in NZ.
ITBRiEF.co.nz published findings that Wellington ranks #2 in the world for sharing economy. New Zealand is the perfect place in the world to be pioneers of the sharing economy, we can be an example to the world in better utilisation of assets.
Trust and Safety are the two biggest focuses of Gypsie. Both Drivers and Passengers are checked by Gypsie so we can be sure that they are a real person. Before someone gets in a car with someone else we have recorded who everyone is , where and when the pickup and dropoff are.
If there are any problems we actively find out what’s going on. Our social systems allow others to find out more about the prospective travel partner with public reviews, ratings, images and a connection feature. We also offer a private review and rating where users are able to directly notify us about members who may be a problem and we can do our best to keep everyone riding with us as safe as possible.
There are some big European and other International players about to enter the NZ market with a much more polished ‘big budget’ offering, they will make a big impact on how people get around in NZ for both travelers and locals, we hope by being first in the market and a wholly kiwi business to keep a good part of the market share here.
The builders of Gypsie.co.nz are a team of kiwi web developers, hostel owners and travelers who have been living in the backpacker market for over ten years each. Everyone is traveling now and we hope this website makes it safer easier, more affordable, and a better experience getting around in New Zealand.
We are currently working on an Australian site as well as doing research on an Indonesian site, as Indonesia is a very big place where travelers could really use a price regulated, trustable, safe way to get around, as well as a large local market who have difficulty getting to places that are not serviced by public transport.
These travelers are some interesting people, the majority of them are in a gap from study to travel before getting very serious about life, they are typically very well brought up, very well educated, ambassadors of their home countries; having the best time of their life in the prime time of their life.
Show them some Kiwi hospitality and give them a ride!? and meet some awesome people.
Enjoy the ride!
