Press release from: World Arctic Fund

Berlin, Germany, 26 March 2018: In August of 2018, the World Arctic Fund will team up with personalized neuroinformatics global leader EMOTIV to use the EMOTIV EPOC+ neuroheadset to steer a sailing boat using only the power of the mind for the first time in world history. The captain of the mission and President of the World Arctic Fund, Simone Orlandini, will undertake this novel experiment in Arctic waters aboard the sailboat Meloria during the Airship Italia Search Expedition (AISE). The EPOC+ is a 14 channel wireless EEG, designed for contextualized research and advanced brain computer interface (BCI) applications.

The AISE will take place for one month beginning in August 2018, and through it the World Arctic Fund hopes to discover the wreckage of the airship Italia, which crashed after departing the North Pole in 1928, in order to be able to recover and donate the remains to museums. The expedition will be filmed and is set to broadcast on partner channels and shown in a documentary.

“The North Pole is the purest and last place on Earth and the perfect and most challenging place to undertake something like this for the first time in world history.” says Simone Orlandini, President of the World Arctic Fund and Captain of the mission. “We will set numerous world records on this mission, and steering a boat with the power of the mind for the first time while spearheading this mission will be a dream come true. This journey to the North Pole with EMOTIV is the next step to the future, the next step for humanity.”

From enabling a quadriplegic man to drive a Formula One race car to controlling drones and robots, EMOTIV connects smart technologies to control physical and virtual objects with the mind to bridge humans and technology by leveraging machine learning and EMOTIV’s easy to use, scientific grade, mobile EEG technology. “The development of high quality neurotechnologies that can break out of the lab means we can start using brain data in new applications, new contexts and in this case, new extremes,” says Kim Old, Vice President of Corporate Development at EMOTIV, “this collaboration with the World Arctic Fund is all about pushing our technology to its current limits to inspire the next wave of innovation.”

About World Arctic Fund
The World Arctic Fund is a non-government organization established in Berlin
by international media, science and environmental experts, who aim to protect the Arctic.

We support arctic researchers who cannot complete their research for lack of funds within their national research institutions and help them carry out sampling and observations in regions not covered yet by mainstream research organizations.

We promote public awareness of the Arctic region’s strategic importance for a sustainable future by popularizing these research expeditions and their to the general public.

We are launching the first expedition to the Arctic with the use of 4 sailing boats. The expedition is spearheaded by Capt. Simone Orlandini
