A Kid Reporter in action

KUALA LUMPUR – 1st March 2018: The award-winning Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, a team of student journalists ages 10-14 from around the world, is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Kids in Asia with a passion for journalism and an interest in reporting “news for kids by kids” are invited to submit their application at their local Scholastic Asia office. Application deadline is on 31st May 2018. For more information about the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps and the application process, visit: www.scholastic.asia/en/news-press-corps.

“For nearly 20 years, the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps has provided a forum for students to share their observations and perspectives with their peers. Beyond just another extra-curricular activity outside school hours, it provides the rare opportunity to be part of an international media organisation. It builds character, alongside nurturing writing and critical-thinking skills at a young age – valuable skills that can be applied into their future careers,” said Selina Lee, Vice President of Scholastic Asia. “But most importantly, their observations have the real potential to educate, move hearts and spark conversations – a powerful step towards making real positive change in their communities.”

Recognised as an official member of the media, Scholastic News Kids Reporters will gain first-hand journalism experience through local and national news assignments, which lead to unique opportunities to witness important events and interview local icons. Since 2016, the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps has welcomed applications in Asia for bright and curious minds in the region.

With culturally-rich news stories, these student journalists have since proudly brought Asia into the global conversation. From historical landmarks to local delicacies, and from the bright lights of Diwali to the festive Lunar New Year, these local news stories have piqued the interests of readers from all parts the globe. Sparking positive change, past assignments have also increased awareness on various social issues while inspiring dreams through interviews with celebrated local entrepreneurs.

Contributing to an international team, these local stories stand among international news of humanitarian icons, television personalities and professional athletes reported by fellow kid journalists from all over the world.

“One of the best things about working with this talented group of young journalists is witnessing their passion for keeping fellow students informed on topics that matter to them and have a significant impact on our society,” said Suzanne McCabe, editor of the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps. She further enthused, “I look forward to working with another group of talented students this year as they continue to think critically about the world around them and bring to light important stories for kids everywhere.”

Throughout the 2017 – 2018 program year, 44 kid reporters covered breaking news, current events, entertainment stories, and sporting events around the world, including the 2017 National Book Awards, the 2016 presidential election, the Lunar New Year, the U.S. Open, and the Royal Melbourne Show in Australia, in addition to breaking news of natural disasters. Their articles and video interviews are available on the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps website (www.scholastic.com/kidspress) as well as in select issues of Scholastic Classroom Magazines, which reach more than 25 million students in the United States and abroad. Recently the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps has also received an honourable mention in the 2017 FOLIO: Eddie and Ozzie Awards for “Editorial Team of the Year.”
