Talented Bay Area Playwright Vicki Cameron Passes Away in New York City

Press release from: Donley Communications

New York, NY, March 17, 2018 -- Vicki Cameron, a gifted playwright who migrated to the Big Apple from Oakland, California, died suddenly of a heart attack in New York on October 25, 2017.

Vicki was born and raised in Oakland, where she graduated from Mills College with a bachelor's degree in dramatic arts in 1975. She lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area for the next 40 years, during which she wrote numerous plays for and about women. Among her themes are the entrenched social barriers and interpersonal biases that all women, particularly those in the LGBTQ community, encounter as they struggle for self- and social acceptance on many fronts.

Vicki also wrote for local newspapers in Oakland and Berkeley before joining the staff of the East Bay Express as a production editor, theater critic, and restaurant reviewer. She moved to New York City in early 2004.

Her good friend Marion Osmun comments, "Like many people who come to New York, Vicki dreamed of becoming a success in the theater. Her plays were original and sought to express the nuances and complexities of human relations. She did so with empathy, quirky humor, and love."

Vicki's play Burnin' Daylight, a dark comedy about two estranged sisters who find themselves the unexpected heirs of a legacy that dramatically alters their lives, was produced off-Broadway in 2008.

Author and screenwriter Anna Ray-Jones, whose work Vicki edited, said, "She was not only a very talented dramatist, but she had an uncanny intuition of what worked in terms of character, structure and dialogue and possessed a superb instinct of how the core of a dramatic scene should be shaped that would make it come alive. She will be sadly missed."

Vicki leaves behind a niece, Kim Moslander of Granite City, Illinois, and many loyal friends across the country. A GoFundMe site has been established to raise money to enable Vicki's niece to transport her remains to Oakland and inter them in her mother's crypt. Individuals wishing to donate to this fund may do so at: https://www.gofundme.com/help-bring-vicki-cameron-home.

Any funds that may be left over after expenses will be donated in Vicki's memory to the Theater Studies Program offered by Mills College in partnership with the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) in San Francisco. Both institutions were deeply important to Vicki during her early development as a director and playwright in the 1970s and throughout her life.
