Langerwehe, Germany, September 2009. The Langerwehe-based packaging film specialist alesco (alesco.net) will be presenting itself at the drinktec trade fair in Munich, Germany (Hall A2, Stand 544) as an environmentally friendly supplier of systems for beverage bottlers. Carbon neutral manufacturing processes that help to conserve the environment and packaging films with reduced thicknesses will be the primary focus. The selection of products being highlighted includes the new BIOSHRINK film, which is one of the world’s first compostable shrink films made from renewable raw materials, the conventional, environmentally friendly, printed ECOSHRINK film and the stable stretch hood for securing loads on Düsseldorf palettes.

Compostable BIOSHRINK beverage film made from renewable materials
BIOSHRINK will be launched at the trade fair and will initially be available for 6 x 0.5 litre PET and PLA drinks containers, with additional sizes to follow. The Langerwehe-based film manufacturer is one of the world’s first system suppliers to offer such environmentally friendly PET and PLA packaging. As with all other compostable biofilms produced by alesco from renewable materials in accordance with the DIN EN 13432 standard, the new BIOSHRINK film will be produced carbon neutrally and with the exclusive use of green electricity. At the request of customers, it will also be printed with water colours for impressive advertising. SDI, the packager of soft drinks, is a good reference customer. It was involved in the testing process for the new film and was extremely impressed by its quality. “The behaviour of the film in the packaging machines was excellent and it is definitely ready for the market,” states Daniel Gebels, purchasing manager at SDI in Erftstadt, Germany.

ECOSHRINK beverage film
A primary goal in the development of the conventional ECOSHRINK film was reducing the thickness of the film while retaining important properties such as transparency and load capacity. Now, with approximately 23 grams of ECOSHRINK film it is possible to shrink wrap and transport a six litre beverage container, for example. The film is available as both a single and multi-layer product. In addition to the packaging of PET and glass bottles, the alesco ECOSHRINK film can also be used for packing cans or cartons.

Stretch hoods
Protective films for Düsseldorf palettes and all other common palette sizes also form part of alesco’s system supplier portfolio at the trade fair in Munich. The stretch hoods are particularly impressive for their great stability and retentive strength. And the environment will also benefit from alesco’s new palette packaging products – in contrast to shrink films, no energy is required to warm the film and the high level of stability offered means that a lot of products can be efficiently packed on individual palettes.

Carbon neutral production
Customers that are especially interested in using environmentally friendly packaging films can arrange for their films to be produced carbon neutrally at alesco. To make this service possible, alesco had the CO2 footprint of its products calculated at the beginning of 2009. alesco simply passes any extra costs incurred in the carbon neutral production on to the customer without surcharge. alesco acquires the corresponding number of emission reduction certificates to offset the amount of greenhouse gases emitted during production. Customers can choose from a range of carbon neutral projects and the proceeds from the certificates are used for environmental protection projects throughout the world that help offset CO2 emissions.

alesco GmbH & Co. KG is one of the most renowned and well-established processors of plastics in Germany. At its two production facilities, in Langerwehe and Alsdorf in Germany, 210 staff extrude, tailor and print film products for consumer and industrial applications. Approximately 45,000 tonnes of plastics are converted annually to flexible film packaging. One of the most important subjects in this process for the four directors, Gunter Depiereux, Philipp Depiereux, Karl Heinz Thielen and Heinz Mundt, is sustainability: new environmentally friendly products, in particular those made from sustainable raw materials, are as important here as the promotion of environmental protection by means of resource-conserving manufacturing processes and the assumption of social responsibilities. Since the beginning of 2009, all the company’s products can also be obtained with certified carbon neutral production.
