Open Range Communications Selects Wichorus Smart 4g Packet Core

WiChorus SmartCore Provides Foundation for Open Range Communications’ Operationally Efficient and Open WiMAX Network

SAN JOSE, Calif. – September 10, 2009 – WiChorus, the wireless industry’s Smart 4G Packet Core leader, today announced that it has been chosen by Open Range Communications Inc. to supply its SmartCore™ platform. WiChorus is recognized as a 4G Packet Core leader because of SmartCore’s unmatched performance, massive service flow capacity and unparalleled network optimization and content monetization capabilities. Open Range is the nation's largest Rural Utilities Service (RUS) borrower with a deployment that will offer service to six million people in 546 rural communities across 17 states. With this new 4G wireless network, Open Range will offer state-of-the-art 4G services to un-served and underserved customers across America in the fourth quarter of this year.

“The Open Range business model has unique requirements for high operational network efficiency while maintaining the quality and variety of advanced services that could be offered to our customers,” said Mike McHale, chief operating officer of Open Range. “WiChorus SmartCore enables us to deploy an operationally-efficient, open and advanced network for our customers.”

“Open Range has the vision of stimulating local development across United States by connecting more than 500 communities to the Internet-highway using 4G wireless technology,” said Rehan Jalil, president & CEO of WiChorus. “We are delighted to contribute in accomplishing this vision by enabling an operationally efficient 4G wireless network. WiChorus Smart 4G Packet Core solutions enable flexible deployment models, open network architecture and network optimizations needed to build such a network.”

As the service-engine for 4G networks, the WiChorus SmartCore solution enables operators to offer a uniform and comprehensive layer of services on access networks. SmartCore provides a key interface to millions of constantly moving mobile devices with their multiple service flows to the IP world, managing security, dynamic services, seamless mobility, paging, location tracking and dynamic charging. The platform provides key analytics about the network and enforces cross-layer optimizations to reduce OPEX.
“There’s a natural tendency to focus on the radio elements of any wireless solution, but such ignores where the real value is,” said Craig Mathias, a principal with the wireless and mobile advisory firm Farpoint Group. “Real customer benefits and carrier competitive advantage are obtained via the ability to manage, control, and provision services in the core of the carrier’s network. Open Range is catching a very important wave here: one that will reshape how we look at – and what we get from – wireless networks going forward.”

WiChorus SmartCore platforms received USDA acceptance and ‘Buy American’ Status from USDA RUS earlier in 2009.
