Daniel Imperato and Webster Brooks, 2008 White House Candidates

Hartford, CT - June 13, 2006 - Today, Webster Brooks, Vice-Presidential candidate on the Imperato-Brooks 2008 Independent ticket called on both houses of Congress to quickly pass the Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act (VRARA) to renew key provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Brooks said "Although the temporary provisions of the Voting Rights Act aren't scheduled to expire until August 2007, it is critical that Congress brook no delay in passing this bill and putting it on the President's desk as soon as possible. There are many citizens who mistakenly believe that if the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is not renewed, they will lose their right to vote. That is patently untrue, but given the growing lack of confidence that America's elections are being fairly conducted and every vote is being counted, we don't need to further exacerbate fears about any American citizen's fundamental right to vote."

The proposed VRARA legislation will restore pre-clearance provisions for 16 states cited by the Federal government for historically engaging in discriminatory practices against minorities while attempting to register to vote or voting. These states must pre-clear any changes to their voting laws or procedures with the Department of Justice or the U.S. District Court for the District of Washington, D.C., to ensure they do not discriminate against minority voters.

The provisions also authorize the Attorney General to assign federal observers to monitor elections. Brooks said "We need the strongest enforcement possible to start rebuilding confidence that our nation is holding fair and clean elections."

Another key provision of the Voting Rights Bill will provide bilingual voting assistance in certain languages, for Hispanics, Asian-Americans, Native Americans, and Native Alaskan languages for citizens with Limited English Proficiency. Brooks said that this provision is crucial to expanding participatory democracy for our newest citizens, and vesting them in the estate of our extended republic."

The temporary provisions of the Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act that are set to expire in 2007, would be extended for another 25 years. "For the sake of our nation," Brooks said, "I sincerely hope this will be the last time there is a need to renew the Voting Rights Act of 1965. If by 2032, America cannot have fair and clean elections for all of its citizens regardless of race and nationality, then our country will be in great peril." Brooks said that the Imperato/Brooks 2008 platform not only calls for the renewal of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, but also strengthening the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) to restore integrity to the voting process.
