Abstract
Global sweet potato market revenue amounted to 98,416 million USD in 2015, moving up by +5.4% against the previous year level. Overall, global sweet potato market continues to indicate a perceptible growth: the market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the market revenue increased by +16% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global sweet potato market revenue peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global sweet potato production was primarily driven by population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the sweet potato output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The country with the largest volume of the sweet potato output in absolute volumes was China (71,357 thousand tonnes), accounting for 66% of global production. Moreover, sweet potato output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Nigeria (3,861 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Tanzania with a share of 4%. From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of China's sweet potato producton stood at -0.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Nigeria (+5.9% per year) and Tanzania (+14.2% per year).

The world sweet potato harvested area amounted to 8,520 thousand ha in 2015, which was 1.9% more than the previous year figure. The harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.6% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total sweet potato harvested area peaked in 2010, falling back in the following year. From 2011 to 2015, the total sweet potato harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.

The global average sweet potato yield amounted to 127 thousand hg/ha in 2015, fluctuating near the previous year level. The yield figures recorded an upward trend over the period under review, with a compound annual growth rate standing at +0.3% from 2007 to 2015. These yield figures maintained, all in all, a stable trend pattern throughout the analyzed period. The highest sweet potato yields were recorded in 2008, when it peaked at 131 thousand hg/ha. Afterwards, it decreased slightly and then fluctuated around these levels throughout the analyzed period.
