DALLAS – The Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism is pleased to announce that Dallas attorney Jonathan E. Smaby has been selected to lead the organization as its Executive Director.

The Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism (TCLEP) promotes the ethical practice of law and the highest standards of professional conduct by attorneys. TCLEP also administers the “Justice James A. Baker Guide to the Basics of Law Practice” course, which the Supreme Court of Texas requires all newly licensed Texas lawyers to attend. Mr. Smaby will oversee TCLEP’s ongoing operations and help develop new programming opportunities for education and training.

“The Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism, which is one of the leading organizations of its kind in the nation, plays a fundamental role in preserving and building upon our state’s great legal tradition,” says Mr. Smaby. “I am excited to help guide this organization as we work with the legal profession and the general public to promote these ideals.”

Mr. Smaby has a long history of involvement with TCLEP, from serving as Course Director for the group’s CLE programs to co-authoring the third edition of Opening and Managing a Law Practice, which is published by TCLEP. He is also a longtime member of TCLEP.

Prior to accepting the Executive Director position, Mr. Smaby was in private practice, where he represented clients in a variety of legal matters, including business transactions, litigation, employment, and health care. In addition, he has advised lawyers and law firms on law office management and business issues. His articles on legal, ethical and other issues have appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The National Law Journal, Texas Lawyer and Law Practice Management magazine.

An active member of the legal and charitable communities, until recently Mr. Smaby was a longtime member of the Advertising Review Committee of the State Bar of Texas. He has also served on the board of directors for Gilda’s Club North Texas and The Hillcrest Academy.
