Submissions Open for Actuality Media Documentary Scholarship

February 1, 2017 (Orlando, Florida): Submissions are open for the chance to win a study abroad opportunity of a lifetime with international service-learning organization, Actuality Media.

The Actuality Media Scholarship Competition invites aspiring filmmakers to produce a short documentary on a local changemaker making a sustainable impact on chronic social and environmental problems.

The grand prize is a 100% scholarship for a 2018 Actuality Media Documentary Outreach program in India, Cambodia, Guatemala or Zambia.

Actuality Media takes students and emerging filmmakers around the world to study the art and practice of filmmaking while producing short documentaries on individuals and organizations providing innovative solutions to developing communities.

Program Director Robin Canfield said last year’s scholarship competition provided an invaluable platform for changemakers to showcase their work to a local and global audience.

“It was inspiring to learn about many organizations around the world doing great things in their community as a result of our first scholarship competition last year,” Mr. Canfield said.

“So many changemakers saw their organization featured in a short film that they can leverage for self-promotion, and I can't wait to see what powerful stories this year's featured changemakers will get to share about themselves.”

Last year's scholarship winner, Teun Brock, urged aspiring film-makers entering this year's competition to focus on connecting with their characters by “really diving into their lives”.

“Don't be afraid to connect with people. Dig deep and discover the smaller stories hiding in the big picture, and vice versa,” he said.

“There are inspiring stories everywhere you look.”

Mr Brock produced El Libro Volador on Actuality Media's Documentary Outreach in Nicaragua last year. The film showcases a Bibliobus project helping children in rural Esteli develop a love of reading.

Submissions for Actuality Media's scholarship competition close 1 March, 2018.
