Rendering of GlucoScanner, the innovative way to measure blood glucose level.

January 2018 – GlucoScanner, a new, powerful invention is about to revolutionize the world of thousands of people who are currently forced to daily check the glucose levels in their blood. This pioneering device has been invented by the Dynamic Brain Labs LLC in Tokyo, Japan.

Diabetes is a chronic degenerative disease characterized by abnormal levels of glucose in the blood due to insulin deficiency or insulin resistance. Type I affects about 10% of diabetic patients and usually occurs in children. This type of diabetes causes the destruction of beta cells in the pancreas and patients with this disease have to inject insulin every day and throughout life. Type II diabetes affects 90% of diabetic patients; in these patients cells fail to respond normally to insulin so they have to constantly check their glucose levels and assume specific drugs to maintain blood glucose levels in the normal range. Typically middle-aged people are at highest risk for developing type II diabetes, and numerous risk factors have been recognized to be associated with its onset, including familiarity with diabetes, lack of exercise, being overweight and belonging to some ethnic groups.

The US are facing a new alert. In fact, between the young, the type II pathology, linked to obesity, is expanding. If until a few years ago kids fell ill with type I diabetes, today young people are increasingly affected by type II diabetes, once called "adult". From 2001 to 2009 the prevalence of type II diabetes has increased by 21% among young Americans under 20 years, both male and female, with some differences between different ethnic groups (it is higher among American Indians and between non-Hispanic blacks). Currently there are about 19 thousand cases of illness. Type I is also expanding: in the same period it increased by 23%. Worldwide, the growth rate of type I diabetes in young people is 3% per year.

Until now, the only way to keep blood sugar under control was to be daily bothered by micro punctures, carried out with special needles.

GlucoScanner revolutionizes this annoying control methodology. It is a non-invasive sensor for blood glucose levels, working through optical technology and signal processing methods, being patented and undergoing development at the Dynamic Brain Labs.

GlucoScanner is the only device in the world that does not require the penetration of tissues and the continuous finger pricking, avoiding arm patches and additional costs for disposable products.

GlucoScanner is a project developed by Stefano Valenzi and Peter Jurica, who founded their own lab to continue applying their combined 25 years of professional research experience gathered with the top research institutes and industry leaders in the world.

The project aims at improving the diabetics’ life qualities and at facilitating communication for the scientific community and medical professionals. GlucoScanner is an integrated system of sensors, mobile apps and data services designed to enable global scale research of diabetes, to provide new insights into lifestyle improvements, to help potentially avoiding health related crises.

Thanks to innovative technologies and experience with modern data analysis methods, preliminary GlucoScanner evaluation of blood glucose levels already show accuracy better than any other non-invasive optical devices. Dynamic Brain Labs has already performed two experiments with the general public, inviting over 50 subjects in the Tokyo area. The first experiment took place in June 2017 with a 3rd generation prototype, tested in the range of ~80mg up to 530mg/dL.

The project needs more testing and a crowdfunding campaign has been launched for this purpose, in order to continuously improve the project and the accuracy, and to became a very comfortable way for continuous blood glucose monitoring, and helping preventing diabetic crisis.

Glucoscanner has the ability to be automatically adaptable to each individual user. Its patented technology went beyond known limits of optical methods given by individual differences such as skin colors, tissue composition and blood density. Moreover, it will be able to measure not only glucose, but also monitoring on all the parameters of body, like heartbeat and the oxygen, in order to have always a clear frame of the physical status of who wears it. Thanks to the Cloud Software and the mobile app, the system alerts the doctor and 5 selected numbers by calling them automatically in case of problem and it is connectable to a smartphone, to collect all the data to check the health status.

The device is based on optical technology and will be applied on a finger: "We have to reduce its size to make it smaller than a mobile phone. We have already contacted the people responsible for miniaturization: it will cost about 130-150 thousand dollars. This is why we use crowdfunding. Then, of course, the device will be tested on as many patients as possible,” explains Stefano Valenzi. “It will definitely change the life of diabetic persons”.
