Location
The hotel flanks Duplication Road, one of Colombo's main thoroughfares. Traffic noise is inevitable though many of the rooms are set back and away from the road. This location is fairly central and most of Colombo's sights – such as the National Museum, Gangaramaya Temple and prominent art galleries – can all be reached in a 15-minute drive. The popular Gallery Café restaurant is a five-minute walk away, as is Barefoot, a local handloom store. Ubiquitous tuk tuks are the obvious way to get around though Uber is available in Colombo too. Bambalapitiya Railway Station, on the Southern Coast Line, is a 15-minute walk away.

Style & character
Colombo Court Hotel & Spa is an amalgamation of a series of converted buildings complemented by a sustainable design ethos. The décor is rustic-industrial-chic with a strong focus on local art. The bar is highly styled (think sofas crafted from hospital beds and tractor seat bar stools), and the lobby features a fantastic scrap metal tree sculpted from old bicycle parts that sweeps up to the higher floors. Décor in the bedrooms is more simplistic. Little furnished nooks across different levels of the hotel make it feel homely despite there being 32 rooms.

Service & facilities
The staff are armed with smiles and aim to please. There's a well-shaded swimming pool, a separate whirlpool tub (though its location – in the reception area of the spa – is quite public) and a few sun beds and canopied loungers. The poolside spa, staffed by Balinese therapists, is adequate though road noise impacts slightly on its tranquillity. There's a generous library filled with books and magazines and a small business centre with iMac.

No two rooms are alike and of the 32 rooms, 15 are suites. Many rooms don't have views and only a few open onto functional balconies or terraces. The base category deluxe rooms are small yet offer good value as they share the same amenities as the more expensive rooms, including comfortable beds, minibars, electric safes, satellite TVs and en-suite bathrooms with rain showers. Superior deluxe rooms might have a balcony or terrace while the slightly roomier suites (which are only around $50/£39 more than the deluxe rooms) are additionally equipped with coffee machines, cement bathtubs and iMacs.

Food & drink
The hotel's range of food and drink is excellent. The restaurant and bar are in a three-floor block overlooking the road, and there's also a daytime pool café and roof terrace. The air-conditioned Scarlet Room is the hotel's formal dining option, serving predominantly Italian cuisine for dinner. It's also the venue for breakfast; the Sri Lankan option is delicious though this is the only occasion that a local dish features on the menu. The alfresco Cloud Café, up on the rooftop, is a more relaxed venue for pizza, tapas and paninis, and holds regular live music events. This is the place for sundowners, however you could also drop into the Loft Lounge Bar (a favourite haunt of young locals) to dive into their cocktail menu.

Value for money
