The Mandrake Root, The Wife

The Mandrake Root, The Wife

500 years after its hugely successful first performance in 1518 a UK film celebrates Machiavelli’s comedy La Mandragola, The Mandrake Root. In his lifetime Machiavelli was more famous for this comic play than The Prince, which was not published until after his death. Made entirely on location in Italy this English language production is faithful to original text and is available exclusively online through European Drama Network.

The play is a hilarious tale of cunning, desire and deception. A fast paced story about a young man’s desire to seduce the virtuous young wife of an old and foolish lawyer takes place over 24-hours. Each character is deceived but happily believes that he or she is shrewder than the next. Not least the wife, who having been deceived by her husband to sleep with a stranger, wants him to have forever, what he wanted for her to have for only one night. As Machiavelli puts it, why do the most beautiful women always marry the fools.

The film provides an alternative view of the Machiavellian man who was considered by his friends to be a wit, but whose name now means political intrigue and double dealing. Machiavelli turned to writing comedies when his diplomatic career finished after the return of Medici’s ended of the Florentine republic. Thrown in prison he was lucky to survive and despite dedicating The Prince to the Medici, it was his comedy that brought him fame.

This play is rarely performed in the UK unlike the US where it is performed regularly and one of Tom Hanks first professional roles was in a stage production in New York.

In the UK the film is certified as a suitable for those aged 12 and over. It is available to stream online to buy or rent for less than $2 on the European Drama Network website.
