Press release from: Lagazuoi Dolomiti

An extraordinary exhibition to inaugurate the brand new Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti complex on the summit of Mount Lagazuoi at an altitude of 2778 m.
One of the highest exhibition halls in the world.

Cortina d'Ampezzo, 9th January 2018_ From 10th January to 2nd April 2018 you will be able to see for the first time in the same place the region's two most significant archaeological finds - the first inhabitants of the Alps: Similaun Man and Mondeval Man, providing a rare glimpse of the life of prehistoric man in the high mountain regions after the last great glacial era, in the exhibition titled ÖTZI & VALMO – When prehistoric man walked the Alps.
The first temporary exhibition is to housed at the new exhibition hall, Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti, an exceptional location at an altitude of 2778 m. a.s.l., which is opening its doors to the public for the first time on Wednesday 10th January 2018. The site has four exhibition rooms arranged on three floors at the summit of Mount Lagazuoi, close to the historical mountain refuge of the same name, with a breathtaking view of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The official inauguration of this extraordinary exhibition hall will be on 2nd February 2018.

With the casts and reproductions of the most significant archaeological finds of the area, the exhibition will be a kind of trailer, a glimpse of the 2700 years separating these two men:
Ötzi, the Iceman, who lived 5,300 years ago and whose body was discovered on the Similaun glacier (Val Senales) at an altitude of 3200 m. a.s.l., 85 km. as the crow flies from Mount Lagazuoi, yielding a wealth of unique objects and priceless information about the Copper Age;
Valmo, Mondeval Man, who was buried 8000 years ago in the vicinity of Passo Giau, at an altitude of 2,150 metres, 8 km. as the crow flies from Mount Lagazuoi, and whose burial place is a unique and priceless find that reveals much about the life of Neolithic hunters in the Dolomites – and bears testimony to the climate changes that paved the way for their colonisation of the Alps, changing their way of life.

Valmo used the flint and Ötzi also had access to copper. Valmo and Ötzi had to face the cold climate of the high mountains and find food. The exhibition shows how they honed techniques and knowledge that were of fundamental importance for life at high altitudes, a heritage of experiences handed down through the 75 generations separating the two men.

The exhibition is staged in collaboration with the “Vittorino Cazzetta“ Museum at Selva di Cadore (BL), Associazione Tramedistoria, the University of Ferrara, the Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann (Germany), GEO Magazine, the Archaeological Museum of Bolzano and the Associazione Amici del Museo della Val Fiorentina.

Opening hours:
every day from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm form 10th January to 2nd April
Ticket price:
