Bizarre statistics shows the Tamarillo Chutney recipe drawing hoards of website viewers to Coast to Coast Tours, Auckland’s Number One attraction on Tripadvisor.

The old family recipe which uses the South American Tamarillo fruit (or tree tomato, as it is sometimes referred to), was posted on the Auckland Eco-tour & Farm visit website in October ‘08, and since then has had a profound effect on the tour’s website statistics.
“I use this Tamarillo Chutney recipe all the time during the summer season when we host our Kiwiana Cruise Boat Shore Excursion tour lunches”, says Donna, owner/operator of Coast to Coast Tours. “Everybody loves the chutney and is always inquiring what it is made from, so I thought it would be of interest to our readers to post it on our website - (in a pictorial method). Since I am webmaster of our site, and closely follow our statistics, when we began seeing lots of keywords for Tamarillo Chutney I was simply astonished!”
“We’ve always grown a few Tamarillo trees to make the Chutney”, said Stuart, Donna’s husband and co-tour host, “but never dreamed it would show up in website statistics like this! My Mother who came to our farm in 1922 was the one who developed the recipe, and we’ve been making the stuff for many years. I personally like it on cold meat salads, but our daughters’ love it on just about everything.”
The ‘Tree Tomato’ fruit was for ever in demand during World War II as a supply of a vitamin C fruit, and in 1967 the fruit’s name took on a more commercial name of Tamarillo (to avoid it being confused with the garden tomato). Today, the fruit is in strong demand because of its nutritional elements.
“It’s just as well we have freezers these days”, says Donna, “since the Tamarillo only fruit from May to September they can be peeled and put straight into the freezer, which is great, as I need a constant supply to keep on top of the demand”.
“Tamarillo Chutney is rather addictive”, says Stuart, “and if we run out of it we really notice it. Maybe this is why we are getting so many people looking at our website for the recipe and asking about it when they come on our tour!”

‘Coast to Coast Tours’ was established in 2002. It is an all-inclusive, owner/operated, small group eco-tour company with the primary focus on showing overseas tourists the west Auckland region where the operator’s family has lived since 1922.
