December, 2017 - Leti, a research institute of CEA Tech, has integrated hybrid III-V silicon lasers on 200mm wafers using standard CMOS process flow. This breakthrough shows the way to transitioning away from 100mm wafers and a process based on bulk III-V technology that requires contacts with noble metals and lift-off based patterning. CMOS compatibility with silicon photonics lowers fabrication costs, and provides access to mature and large-scale facilities, which enables packaging compatibility with CMOS driving circuits.

November, 2017 - Heraeus Photovoltaic, the worldwide leading supplier of metallization solutions to the PV industry, announced a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Rietech Solar, a China-based manufacturer of silicon wafers for solar cells. Under the agreement, Rietech Solar will upgrade its manufacturing process to use Hera Glaze, the new high-purity SiO2 diffusion barrier coating from Heraeus, for mass production of it multi-crystalline wafers. For Heraeus, the agreement represents a major step to expand its presence upstream in the solar photovoltaic value chain.

December, 2017 - Apple collaborated with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to develop applications using silicon-based technology, the sources went on to unveil. The two companies intend to apply silicon wafers to dodge the bottleneck that includes the mass transfer of Micro LED chips onto receiver substrates.
