Cimarosa - Requiem in G Minor - Front cover

Rc Record Classic Label, Naxos and Artaria Editions Limited continue the great development of the great Cimarosa Rediscovered project dedicated to the rediscovery of the musical production of one of the most celebrated and important Italian composers of the late eighteenth century, Domenico Cimarosa (Aversa 1749 - Venezia 1801). A few months ago, in June, released a new release of one of the greatest masterpieces of sacred music of the eighteenth century, the "Missa pro defunctis" composed by the musician for the funeral of Mary Adelaide of Camerano, Duchess of Serracapriola, wife of Antonino Maresca, Duke of Serracapriola, Minister in Russia for the office of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, King of the Kingdom of Naples. It was just the same influential Marquis to solicit hiring at the court of Catherine II of Russia by the young, but already affirmed, Cimarosa as Composer and Master of Music of the Real Chamber, commissioned by the musician from 1787 to 1793. As soon as the joint St. Petersburg, Cimarosa was in charge of compiling a Mass of Requiem in a hurry and fury for the sudden death of his protector's wife. The execution took place on the occasion of the solemn burials of the Duchess held in St Petersburg in the Catholic Church of St. Catherine on December 12, 1787. Although rarely executed in modern times, "Missa pro defunctis" is one of the few examples of Mass of Requiem ( second for performance frequency and audience satisfaction, only to the same composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) which remained in the repertory even during the nineteenth century.
The record release offers a performance, as it is said in technical terms, historically informed as it uses the baroque orchestra Harmoniae Templum Chamber Orchestra of London and a series of voice interpreters experienced in the executive practice of the time.

The end result is really of a high standard: the voices of the interpreters are always perfectly in line with the melodic structures created by Cimarosa, while the technique of variations on "From Capo" is perfect and absolutely assimilated; crystal-clear stamps, absolutely discerning and understandable Latin-only listening, without the help of the booklet, always agile and expressive voices. The orchestra, for its part, follows and appreciates even more the vocal ensembles, always ensuring a brilliant performance, in the narrowest times, cautiously reflective in the most peaceful and reflective ones. Cimarosa, moreover, seems to offer us a reading of the complex concept of death according to a traditional aesthetic and intellectual implant at the end of the eighteenth century, of which the master was one of the greatest exponents: his "Requiem" appears to us as a kind of reflection on death and on its inevitability, conceived and taken with tolerance, a spirit of resignation, but also of intimate serenity. He does very well to listen to the "Requeim" of Cimarosa, because he gives us the opportunity to reflect on transcendence, as well as enjoy music that has its formal and structural regularity in its strength. The recording is finally directed by Simone Perugini, conductor and musicologist, curator of the critical edition of the score, and is now considered, given his numerous publications and recording recordings, one of the greatest experts of Domenico Cimarosa. His interpretation follows faithfully, in the intimacy, the spirit of the Cimarosian score, succeeding in digging deeply into every little poignant sign that is laid there. Everyone sings in the direction of Perugini: Even the most hidden and, as it are, neglected instruments of the orchestra sing and come to light thanks to the search for a timbral expression that seems to make everyone protagonists inside, however, of a complex organism .

Cimarosa and Perugini: Echoes of Mozart in "Il Matrimonio Segreto" release
Consider the stamina shown just over 230 years ago in Vienna, when after listening to a three-hour opera (presumably plus a pause between the two acts) Leopold II ordered the work to be repeated in its entirety after an interval for supper. Assuming at least an hour for this (probably longer), the evening’s entertainment must have extended over about nine hours – almost awe-inspiring in this sound-bite era of ours.

"Che si suoni, che si canti, tutti quanti han da brillar" composes Cimarosa on the latest verses with which Giovanni Bertati concludes the comic masterpiece "Il Matrimonio Segreto", which premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 7 February 1792. Early on, as many of the melodies already know, "Il Matrimonio Segreto", although indicated by its authors as Dramma Giocoso (synonym of comic opera), is a very complicated work in many ways:

The rehabilitation of Mozart père, as man, has been going on for some time. His presentation in many popular accounts of the life of Wolfgang Amadeus, as callously exploitative and autocratic, as embittered by jealousy of his son’s genius, has been at the very least tempered, if not entirely refuted, by modern scholarship. We are in a better position, now, to recognise why, at the time of his death, his
