Press release from: Mahler Chamber Orchestra e.V.

Andreas Richter

Andreas Richter

The MCO and its General Manger Andreas Richter will continue their successful collaboration in the future: they have renewed the General Manager’s contract, which expires in March 2010, to 2013.
“I am delighted about this affirmation of my work and understand it as a gesture of approval to continue on the path on which we — the musicians of the orchestra, and my colleagues — have started” commented the old — and new — General Manager after the decision.

Andreas Richter became General Manger of the MCO in 2007, after holding positions as Orchestra Director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester and director of the communications department of the Komische Oper. Together with the MCO Board and Principal Conductor Daniel Harding, he determines the orchestra’s development. In particular, the MCO Residence in North Rhine-Westphalia, which he helped found, is making it possible for the ensemble and its artistic partners to develop innovative projects and secure the orchestra’s future. An essential aspect of this residence are the educational outreach projects which the orchestra is developing with the Orchesterzentrum|NRW in Dortmund, thereby becoming directly involved in the future of music.

General Manager Andreas Richter and the MCO are anticipating an exciting 2009/2010 season, in which the orchestra, together with its founder Claudio Abbado, Principal Conductor Daniel Harding, and many other excellent conductors and soloists such as Kent Nagano, Seiji Ozawa, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Waltraud Meier, Isabelle Faust and Janine Jansen, will perform over 50 concerts and operas all over Europe as well as in China and the United Arab Emirates.

The Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO), with its unusual structure, internationality and outstanding quality, is an ensemble unique to the present time. Its organisation and method of operation make it a model for the future of the European orchestral landscape. Composed of around 40 musicians from 20 different nations, and independent of external sponsorship, the MCO plays operas and concerts all over the world, in cities as well as at exclusive festivals from the North Pole to the Red Sea. The orchestra was founded in 1997 by the musicians themselves and Claudio Abbado, and the two have been reaching milestones of European musical life together ever since.
