Once A Pawn

Once A Pawn

Queer Control Records (QCR) recently announced that Once A Pawn of Lincoln, NE will be included in its new line-up of Resident Artists. The raw and refreshingly intense sound of this guitar-drums rock duo has snatched up considerable local attention and has begun to draw interest nationally. As one of QCR’s five Resident Artists, Once A Pawn is set to bring their act up to the next level. With the support of a label for the first time, the pair looks forward to the opportunity to release their third record and tour new locations.

While some would contend that a two-piece rock band leaves something to be desired, Eric Scrivens’ grungy, yet melodic, guitar, seamlessly matched by the drumming skills and angsty lyrics of Catherine Balta, certainly beg to differ. Scrivens and Balta first found each other in High School gym class, of all places. In the 8 years of playing together since, they have tried working with various bassists, but have always felt better situated as a two-piece. Once A Pawn released its debut EP “This Way” in 2005, and released a self-recorded full-length album in early 2008, “Do You Feel Like This?” The band hopes to release its third album with QCR in late 2009.

Having performed in local LGBT pride celebrations, as well as several fundraisers for LGBT organizations, partnering with QCR is a natural step for Once A Pawn. “I am an out lesbian and have been very involved in the queer community since I came out,” explained Balta. “Everything that QCR stands for is right along with what we stand for. I think that QCR is going to be an awesome organization to be a part of.” Scrivens supports Balta and the band’s involvement with the queer community one hundred percent. "I think that it is important for more straight people like myself to be involved in the queer community,” said Scrivens. “It is about human rights, dignity, and standing up for those who are being oppressed."

Once A Pawn is QCR’s first Resident Artist out of the Southeast. “We are thrilled to welcome Once A Pawn to our family,” said QCR President and CEO Marlene Melendez. “Not only are they amazingly talented and passionate about their music, but they are also willingly visible and supportive of the queer community, which is truly invaluable.”
