The World Theatre Training Institute AKT-ZENT/ITI is welcoming artists from all over the world to the 25th International Directors’ and Trainers’ Colloquium, which will take place in January 2018 in Berlin. This now longstanding tradition has taken place regularly since 1995 in numerous countries across Europe.

At the Colloquia, Dr Jurij Alschitz, artistic director, works with both young and experienced directors and trainers to explore the most relevant themes of the day and open them up for practical application. Whether as part of European research projects or international festivals such as the ‘Theatre Olympics’, the central concern of the Colloquia has always been the innovation of new rehearsal and training techniques, in short, the theatre of tomorrow.

In 2007, the International Directors’ and Trainers’ Colloquium became established as a regular gathering to take place at the start of each year in Berlin. Each year since then, colleagues from across the world have come together for a lively exchange of ideas. Applied training and practical work on stage enables professional artists to experience various different working styles in a short space of time, thus opening up new methodological approaches. In addition, this lively working atmosphere has in the past led to numerous international collaborations. The result of this is an extensive network of theatre practitioners, who can draw on common experiences of the Colloquium as a reference point for their work.

The title of this year’s 25th Jubilee Colloquium will be ‘The New Role of the Role’. With this title, artistic director Dr Jurij Alschitz is linking together that most traditional theme in the art of acting with the newest research in this area and is opening the door for whole other branches of knowledge. New approaches such as the ‘The Rhizome of the Role’, ‘The Sphere of the Role’, ‘The Cloud of the Role’ point towards entirely new practices and dimensions for contemporary rehearsal practice and a necessary emancipation of the actor as bearer of meaning in the theatre.

This year, for the first time, the International Directors’ and Trainers’ Colloquium will be making an exciting new innovation, inviting participants to begin the discussion beforehand on the Hybrid Theatre Training Platform (http://hybrid-theatre-training.org), the Institute’s online learning platform. This will give participants the chance to prepare more thoroughly and meaningfully for the creative encounter. In this way, the collaboration is not just limited to the studio in Berlin, but can begin beforehand and continue long into the future.

Anne-Lise Gabold, leading actress, director, trainer from Denmark reflected in 2016: “Thank you for giving me the chance to meet younger generations of theatre-loving people in the very harmonious atmosphere of the Colloquium, and for the talks and guidance. Having the chance to see my work from another angle provided a healthy and interesting change of perspective.”

The World Theatre Training Institute AKT-ZENT, under the artistic direction of Dr Jurij Alschitz, works as the Research Centre of the International Theatre Institute and as the lead organisation of the European Association for Theatre Culture. It delivers continuing education, training and research through seminars, masterclasses and laboratories in Berlin, Europe and worldwide through co-operation with its international partners. ARS incognita is the Institute’s own series of publications for professional theatre practitioners. The Institute is based in Berlin.
