These oils are usually referred to as permanent tamponades and are removed from the site between four months and six weeks after the surgery. However, due to low viscosity and surface tension, conventional silicone oils tend to emulsify and form bubbles inside the eye, which results in conditions such as glaucoma and inflammation. Such adverse events have led to introduction of higher viscosity silicone oil in order to reduce the chances of emulsification.
