Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatment is a technique of providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to the heart and lungs of patient with inability of utilizing adequate amount of gas exchange. This technique uses a pump to circulate the blood through an artificial lung bank into the bloodstream. It is mostly used for new born babies, providing heart lung bypass support outside the body. This system supports child, awaiting for heart or lung transplant. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatment is used to provide adequate oxygen by removing carbon dioxide allowing heart and lung to heal. The conditions which might require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatment includes, congenital heart defects, meconium aspiration syndrome, Congenital diaphragmatic hernia, severe pneumonia, severe air leak problems, group B streptococcal sepsis and, asphyxia.
