The Refuge by Maria Millan.

The Refugee tells the story of a women’s aid centre where four girls are living in an isolated fortress gatehouse and forced to take an antidepressant treatment.
This short film is a protest against the current crisis that UK aid centres are facing due to drastic cuts in government funding. The Refuge sheds light on the fact that women are being marginalized instead of being accepted into society.

The Refuge is proud to feature Lujza Richter Hugo known for Phantom Thread by Paul Thomas Anderson and model / actress Demi Hannah Scott who has been the face of Uniqlo, Fenty Puma and many other world-class brands.

Maria Millan is a London-based image maker originally from Venezuela. Maria’s talent lies in breath-takingingly beautiful storytelling, as she utilises the subtle art of tension. Her fashion videos and pictures effortlessly bring buried emotion and sentiment to the surface. You can find her intriguing work in Vogue, Jute, Fruk and Ellements Magazine amongst others.

This film is no documentary, Maria stays true to her love of fashion and aesthetics as she enchants her audience with a film where every still could be found in the centrefold of a high-fashion magazine. Her playful use of colour and texture creates a beautiful world that engages the spectator with the intense story that lies beneath the sublime and striking surface.

Tackling gender disparity in an often-frightening world dictated by money and male ego, The Refuge holds a mirror to the contemporary misogyny that is having tragic implications on real lives.

Maria Millan is a London-based Photographer & Film Director originally from Venezuela. She studied Mass Media and Audiovisual Art and has a background in film and television commercials where she used to design and build sets. Millan moved to London in 2011 and started working as an Production Designer for different production houses and shooting stills for numerous English and American magazines as well as working closely with designers. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Ellements, Fruk, Huff, Metal, Funckin' Young, Jute, Eclectic Magazine among others. It has also been exhibited as part of the ‘Contemporary Art Fair 2012’ in Beijing, China. Additionally, her images have been included in the ‘Story of Creativity’ (2012) and ‘Creative’s rising’ (2013) exhibitions in New York City.
Millan is usually the creative director for her shoots but she also likes to dress the set and takes the time to direct models.
Recently she shot a short film titled "The Refuge" as part of her crowdfunding campaign in order to make the feature film from the same story. The film was based on her time volunteering in a women's rights organization.
Since then Maria Millan aims with her work to call attention in gender disparity.
