Abstract
Global chicory production amounted to 557 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +4.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global chicory output pursued a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures decreased at an average annual rate of -1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +14% from the previous year level. In that year, the global chicory production reached its maximum volume, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, global chicory production was buoyed by population growth and popularisation of healthy beverages. These key factors are to remain relevant with regard to chicory output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a noticeable curtailment of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world chicory harvested area amounted to 18 thousand ha in 2015, which was 16.3% more than the previous year figure. The harvested area indicated a pronounced contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -3.0% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total chicory harvested area peaked in 2009, falling back in the following year. From 2010 to 2015, the total chicory harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.

The global average chicory yield amounted to 316 thousand hg/ha in 2015, falling by -10.0% from the previous year figure. The yield figures recorded an upward trend over the period under review, with a compound annual growth rate standing at +1.2% from 2007 to 2015. However, the yield levels displayed some little fluctuations over the recent years. The highest chicory yields were recorded in 2014, when it peaked at 351 thousand hg/ha. Afterwards, it decreased slightly and then fluctuated around these levels throughout the analyzed period.
