Abstract
Global onion and shallot (green) production amounted to 4,145 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level.Overall, the global onion and shallot (green) output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +0.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +4% from the previous year level. In that year, the global onion and shallot (green) production attained its maximum volume of 4,308 thousand tonnes. From 2014 to 2015, the total onion and shallot (green) output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global onion and shallot (green) production was primarily driven by population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the onion and shallot (green) output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a slight curtailment of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.
