Breast Cancer Awareness Month also popularly known as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the United States is an annual health campaign organized by charitable organizations during the month of October.

The campaign works towards spreading awareness and raising funds for breast cancer towards research, prevention, early diagnosis and cure of the disease.

Breast Cancer is the second most common cancer among American women after skin cancer. Although more women are surviving than before, the bitter fact remains that someone is diagnosed with the disease every 10 minutes.

Facts about Breast Cancer:

• A woman’s risk of breast cancer almost doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother/sister/daughter) suffering from the disease.

• However, less than 15% of women who are diagnosed with the disease have their first-degree relative suffering from it. About 85% is diagnosed in women with no family history.

• The most important risk factors are gender (being woman) and age( growing older).

Increasing Incidence of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and the second most common cancer worldwide. Around 1.7 million new cases were detected in the year 2012 which accounts for 12% of total cancer patients and 25% of cancer in women.

Although it was always thought of the disease of the developed world, almost than 50% of cases and 58% of the deaths occur in developing or underdeveloped countries.

Breast cancer survival rates vary greatly worldwide- from more than 89% in developed countries such as US and UK to around 40% or less in low-income countries.

Breast Cancer in India

The trend of breast cancer in India is all the more worrisome. More and more women in the younger age group (in the 30s and 40s) are being diagnosed with breast cancer. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in India.

Not only the increase in number is worrisome, the fact that survival rates of breast cancer patients for 5 years in India is less than 60%, as compared to 89% in the US, which is a huge difference.

This is because of lack of awareness and thus lack of screening for the disease. Like other diseases and cancers, breast cancer if detected early not only can be completely treated, the patients can lead a normal life too.

Lack of Awareness about Breast Cancer and Screening in India

In India, breast cancer is just a story until a near or dear one suffers from it. Screening for the disease and mammograms are like “aliens” even for the educated people. Most people come to the hospital when they are symptomatic. This means late diagnosis and thus low survival rate.

This is quite a contrast as compared to their Western counterparts where women get themselves screened and the disease is detected in early stages.
Spreading awareness is thus the key. The more the women know about the disease and prevention, the better the chances of survival and cure.

IndiCure has taken up the task of spreading awareness about the disease in all possible manner. Having taken as its social responsibility, the organization is doing its bit through social media, articles, newsletter, visuals and print media to spread awareness and encourage more and more women to undergo screening to detect the disease in its earliest stage.
