Microchips Accelerating the Evolution of Drug Device Sophistication

09-26-2017 09:09 AM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: Greystone Research Associates

(Amherst, NH) - As therapeutic drug markets continue to evolve, advancements in drugs and devices are producing several positive improvements. New formulations are extending drug release profiles, leading to less frequent dosing. Enhancements in syringe and injector usability are increasing the number and types of therapeutics that can be self-administered.

These advances have revealed a new set of concerns. Weekly, bi-weekly and monthly dosing deprives the patient of the repetitive reinforcement that is a key tenet of self-injection safety at a time when the dangers associated with powerful drug side effects are placing a priority on the need for accurate dosing and delivery. In response, device suppliers have been developing syringes and injectors with new technology, adding capabilities that address self-administration safety concerns. Using innovative technical solutions, these device features decrease patient reliance on recall, guiding them through the medication process and reducing the risk of drug dosing errors.

Capabilities enabled by microchips numerous and diversified, limited only by the goals of the designer, the level of device complexity that can be tolerated and the total device cost that the market application can support. Existing microprocessor controlled injectors include a wide range of features including patient authentication, injection customization, device power management which is important for higher end processors, data capture and transfer, and patient EMR integration.

To fully take advantage of the capabilities that microchips can support, designers incorporate additional components into the device design. These elements can include sensors, data displays and device-to-patient communication.

Microchip-enabled injection devices are being supplied across several device categories. Examples include single and multi-use autoinjectors, needle-free injectors, pen injectors and wearable SC injectors. As drug developers continue to formulate injectable drugs for sustained release to support less-frequent dosing, the perceived value of microchip-enabled devices that can effectively interact with patients, guiding them through the injection event and providing assurance that the dose was properly delivered will increase.

The evolving drug delivery device sector and the devices that are being designed to deliver them are detailed in a new and comprehensive report researched and written by Greystone Research Associates. Microchip Controlled Subcutaneous Drug Delivery Devices analyzes the technology, applications and therapeutic markets for injection devices that incorporate microprocessors to enable advanced patient features. The report also analyzes demand drivers, development factors, market considerations, and strategic and economic factors, and provides profiles of market sector participants.
