The zinc-nickel surface coating developed by Stauff has proved itself in practice in agriculture

The zinc-nickel surface coating developed by Stauff has proved itself in practice in agriculture

Superior resistance to aggressive substances

The use of components in agricultural machinery places high demands on the corrosion resistance of hydraulic line components, such as tube and hose connections and fasteners. They are not just exposed to usual weather and climate-related hazards, but frequently come into contact with particularly aggressive substances: with fertilizers containing phosphate or nitrogen, pesticides, cleaning concentrates, oils and other media.

Stauff, one of the leading manufacturers of line components and hydraulic accessories, based in Werdohl/Germany, has been using a zinc/nickel surface coating for steel components for over ten years, which offers extremely good protection against red rust or base metal corrosion, even compared to other manufacturers’ zinc/nickel coatings. A large proportion of the product range is produced as standard with the chromium VI-free zinc/nickel surface coating, also including the company’s own Stauff Connect tube connectors range and Voswinkel hose connectors.

In-house test chamber for all hazardous substances

The coating offers over 1,200 hours of resistance to red rust / base metal corrosion under practical test conditions in the salt spray chamber in line with DIN EN ISO 9227. It therefore exceeds the most demanding requirements, as defined in the VDMA Standard Sheet 24576. However, there are no other general standards or cross-vendor regulations, for instance governing fertilizer resistance. According to Thomas Butzki, Head of the Test Laboratory in the Stauff Technology Centre in Werdohl: “For us as a manufacturer of quality components, the salt spray chamber test is inadequate as the sole comparable criterion.” Stauff and Voswinkel components with a zinc/nickel coating are exposed to aggressive media, such as hydraulic, lubrication and engine oils, fuels, coolants, brake fluids etc., in a test rig specifically developed to determine the resistance of materials and coatings. “We also offer the manufacturers of agricultural machinery the opportunity to individually test our products with fertilizers, pesticides, cleaning concentrates and other media. The assessment of our zinc/nickel coating can be proved and its resistance objectively demonstrated by means of clearly defined and practical conditions and time periods accompanied by appropriate documentation,” concludes Thomas Butzki.
