Press release from: African Youth Movement [AYM]

The African Youth Movement in conjunction with the World Forum of Civil Society Networks [UBUNTU], is inviting 300 young leaders from Nigeria and all over the world for a conference on promoting civic responsibility, international governance and the millennium development goals [MDGs] in communities and beyond. The main objective of the conference is to establish an active national and global coalition of youth leaders that will continue to act for the promotion of responsible citizenship, transparency, conflict resolution and democracy in Nigeria around the world. The other aims will include : To - Gather together a diverse group of stakeholders and explore theory and methods for leadership and progress in Nigeria and Africa right up to influencing international policies and decisions; Co-create with participants an awareness of the benefits in the millennium development goals and the “in larger freedom report” conducive to personal, group and societal development; Provide an opportunity for stakeholders especially youths and women to experience and practice a participative and environmentally friendly way of living in a multicultural community; Inspire stakeholders especially youths and women with the courage to return to their communities and be active agents for change; Encourage the participants, through creative workshops, to connect to their passions and potential towards sustainable development. In order to guarantee that the coalition we hope to create is not merely a one-off event, and that the youths will be able to continue working on promoting responsible citizenship and democracy, we intend to create a network that will ensure the continuity and viability of our actions. We believe that holding the seminar in Akwa Ibom State, one of the Niger Delta States in Nigeria would give extra depth and context to the discussions and expose grassroots leaders-in-the-making to the complex and multi-cultural nature of life in Nigeria. Your presence would be appreciated and would allow us all to work for better cooperation on civic responsibility, International governance, a safer society and eventually - a better world.

Date: April 20th-21st 2006

Venue: Women Development Centre, IBB Way, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

Signed

Otu, Uwem Robert. President, African Youth Movement, No 42 Dibue Road, P.O.BOX 263, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, T: 2348054253616, 8065319262, E: africanyouthforum@yahoo.com or aymnig@yahoo.com
