B. Braun to Expand the Range of its PAS-X MES Installations: Werum Receives New Order for LIFE Nutrition Project

PAS-X to be deployed in the Manufacture of Nutrition Solutions in Melsungen, Germany, and for Company-Wide Standardization of Weighing & Dispensing System

Lueneburg, February 19, 2009 - B. Braun Melsungen AG has commissioned Werum Software & Systems to install its PAS-X Manufacturing Execution System (MES) at B. Braun's new LIFE Nutrition plant. In July 2008, B. Braun laid the foundation stone for a new nutrition production facility at its headquarters in the small spa town of Melsungen in Germany. The site is scheduled to start production in 2010.

Since LIFE (Leading Infusion Factory Europe) first started production in 2004, PAS-X has been used effectively at its factory site for the manufacture of infusion solutions. In fact, in September 2008, LIFE's 500 millionth infusion solution container rolled off its assembly line.

B. Braun will also standardize its Weighing and Dispensing software by implementing PAS-X in pharmaceutical operations across the entire B. Braun group.

LIFE Nutrition
The purpose of the new manufacturing building is to increase output capacity to meet strongly growing demand on the world market in the field of clinical nutrition. The new LIFE Nutrition plant will contain two infusion lines where the IV bags will be filled with solutions for clinical nutrition, such as amino acid solutions, carbohydrate solutions, and fat emulsions. Werum's MES software will provide functions for the weighing and dispensing of starting materials, for paperless execution processes and documentation of master batch records (Electronic Batch Recording), as well as for central object management, including archiving. It will also supply technical evaluation functionality based on KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).

In line with the intended automation concept, PAS-X will take over the main task of integrating process control system applications with SAP's enterprise resource planning system (ERP), and will assure management and information flow within the LIFE Nutrition system environment.

Group-wide Standardization of Weighing and Dispensing
In addition to installing the software at the new factory, B. Braun will use PAS-X to harmonize its software for controlling weighing and dispensing processes across the entire group. Its first project phase will consist of implementing

PAS-X Weighing & Dispensing at three plants in Berlin and Melsungen. One of these facilities is the Technikum pharmaceutical pilot plant, where B. Braun produces micro-batches for research and development and for clinical studies.
