LANXESS “Colored Concrete Works” Initiative Details Use and Benefits of Color in Architecture

Singapore, 16 February 2009 - Global Initiative showcases value and sustainability of colored concrete

The Inorganic Pigments Business Unit of specialty chemicals company LANXESS AG, one of the world's leading manu¬facturers of synthetic iron oxides, is providing the architectural and design communities with detailed information and application know-how concerning the architectural possibilities and benefits of concrete colored with Bayferrox pigments.

Through the ongoing “Colored Concrete Works” initiative (www.colored-concrete-works.com), architects, builders, sales partners and concrete applicators can gain deep insights on using colored concrete to enhance the quality and emphasize the unique character of their structure.

As part of this initiative, a series of inter¬national case studies impressively demonstrate how colored concrete can be used in the 21st century to add beauty and value to architectural objects and how the material properties of concrete can be ideally combined with aesthetic design considerations.

For example, at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, a great amount of pigment from LANXESS’s Bayferrox product line were used to add brilliant colors to the Olympic buildings, including in the Olympic Tennis Centre, the Archery Centre and the Hockey Stadium.

The high-tinting-strength products of the Bayferrox and Chrome Oxide Green lines from LANXESS impart attractive color to construction materials such as cast-in-place concrete, pre-cast concrete components and concrete roofing tiles and pavers. The lightfast and weather-stable products, available in powder, compacted and granulated forms, are distinguished by their high quality as well as their simple and environmentally compatible processing. LANXESS’s colored pigments are thus making an important contribution to sustainability.

LANXESS Inorganic Pigments Business Unit produces approximately 300,000 tons of iron oxide and chrome oxide green pigments per year at its facilities in the United States, Brazil, Asia, Australia and Europe. In China, LANXESS has announced the acquisition of an iron oxide production facility in Shanghai (Jinshan). The production site has a capacity of 30,000 metric tonnes per year for the production of yellow pigments. It is the most modern and the single biggest plant for the production of yellow iron-oxide pigments in China. This facility will ensure the raw material supply for LANXESS Shanghai Pigments, our mixing and milling pigment plant in Shanghai (Taopu).
