Global Bambara Bean Market Outlook

Global bambara bean production amounted to 156 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -2.9% against the previous year level. Overall, the global bambara bean output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +5.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +35% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global bambara bean production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global bambara bean production was primarily driven by growth of African population. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the bambara bean output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The countries with the highest levels of production in 2015 were Burkina Faso (50 thousand tonnes), Cameroon (40 thousand tonnes), Niger (32 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 79% of total output. From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates in almond production among the main producing countries was attained by Niger (+13.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The world bambara bean harvested area amounted to 224 thousand ha in 2015, which was -1.3% less than the previous year figure. The harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +4.8% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total bambara bean harvested area peaked in 2012, falling back in the following year. From 2013 to 2015, the total bambara bean harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.

The global average bambara bean yield amounted to 7 thousand hg/ha in 2015, falling by -1.6% from the previous year figure. The yield figures recorded an upward trend over the period under review, with a compound annual growth rate standing at +0.8% from 2007 to 2015. These yield figures maintained, all in all, a stable trend pattern throughout the analyzed period. The highest bambara bean yields were recorded in 2010, when it peaked at 8 thousand hg/ha. Afterwards, it decreased slightly and then fluctuated around these levels throughout the analyzed period.
