Internet author Richard Wiggins urges communities considering launching a foray into municipal wireless to think before they launch. “You may think you’re launching SpaceShipOne (the fabulously successful space plane designed by Burt Rutan and financed by his partner Sir Richard Branson) but your venture may look more like one of those planes with many wings that failed before the Wright Brothers finally succeeded,” he says.

Numerous municipalities have initiated municipal wireless projects, including (famously) Philadelphia, Oakland County, Michigan, and Tempe, Arizona. “It’s a big deal trying to ‘paint’ an area as big as a city with Wi-Fi,” says Wiggins. “It’s an even bigger deal to cover every square inch,” he says.

“Look at university campuses as an example,” says Wiggins. “A university may spend millions of dollars to cover an area that’s much more compact than even a small city. And technology changes rapidly. Some universities are implementing the second or third generations of their wireless networks.”

Wiggins cautions “There are four major concerns to consider: Cost, coverage, continuity and competition. 1) Do we really understand all the costs of deployment? 2) Do we really intend to cover every square inch of the town? Do we know how many access points that will require? 3) Do we understand what it will take in people and technology to keep the service running for years to come? 4) Are we duplicating existing or nascent wireless broadband alternatives, whether Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, or EV-DO?”

Rich Wiggins wrote one of the early books about the Internet, The Internet for Everyone: A Guide for Users and Providers. His comments on Internet issues have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Forbes, and elsewhere. Currently he is co-authoring a book on Web search analytics with noted information architect Lou Rosenfeld. See richardwiggins.com or wigblog.blogspot.com.
