Local Non-Profit Delivers Insight on First Portable Therapy System

Citra is a speech therapy app designed for children and created by the Tony R. Wells Foundation. Its goal is developing users’ independence and confidence in their communications skills. There are two branches of tools: one for children and one for their caregivers.

The app design provides familiarity and a simple interface for children to use during lessons or at home. It has extensive image libraries, including SymbolStix and Boardmaker, which are customizable and easy to use.

“The app was motivating for her as she worked on her goals,” one parent, Carrie Collier, said, “The visual timer helped her stay focused on the task.”

For caregivers- parents, teachers and therapists- Citra offers various tools including: note logs, task management schedules and a communications board so all parties can communicate in real time. Data is saved and sharable via cloud storage, ensuring the child learns through consistent methods at home or away.

Since its launch, Citra received positive feedback from all types of consumers. Katie Wolf, a speech therapist from the Delaware Speech and Hearing Center, related how “easily accessible, portable, and [it] is versatile”. The app is a great resource to log new plans when a therapy session changes. Furthermore, teachers and therapists commented on the easiness of changing schedules and recording notes through the app.

“My student enjoys the iPad,” one teacher reported to Citra, “[He] was very receptive to using Citra because it was on a device familiar to him.”

Citra’s concept originates from a group of Ohio State University students working with the Wells Foundation. Alongside the Columbus Hearing and Speech Center, they partnered with Sunflower Lab, another local business specializing in cloud, mobile and web development, to bring this concept to life. It has since made an impact on children struggling with speech impairments.
