Grotesk the 8th annual Tage der Typografie

‘Grotesk!’ was the damning judgement on those 19th century type designers who did the unthinkable and made type without serifs. Contemporaries regarded them as dreadful to look at and nasty to use. But times change, and today, sans serif typefaces have become the norm, are regarded as ’modern’, and used in all circumstances from the pragmatic to the experimental. Such a shift in perspective takes courage and persistence, but also provides the potential for exchange and development.

With four days of workshops and lectures on book, logo and type design the 8th Tage der Typografie invites delegates to think outside the box. The event is open to both students and experienced practitioners from the printing, typesetting, graphic arts, design and photographic industries, and is an ideal venue at which delegates can get-together to exchange ideas, advance their knowledge of the subject and put their creative ideas into practice.

As in previous years the event welcomes many well-know presenters who will be conducting a series of stimulating workshops:

Professor Susanna Stammbach runs her own information systems & signage design studio in Basel and teaches at the Hochschule fuer Gestaltung in Luzern, Switzerland. Professor Stammbach’s workshop will cover a wide spectrum of typography from ‘how to develop letter proportions’ to ‘how to create a font’.

In addition to writing and teaching typography, Tanja Huckenbeck and Peter Reichard are designers and editors with spatium – Magazin fuer Typografie. They will be conducting a workshop ‘Magazin grotesk’ exploring the basics of magazine creation.

Alessio Leonardi, designer, typographer, writer and author lives and works in Berlin with his wife Imme with whom he runs the Lion & Bee design studio. In 2001 he became ATypI country delegate for his home country, Italy. His typefaces have been licensed by FontShop and Linotype and since 2002 also through his own label buymyfonts.com. Alessio’s workshop will encourage participants to forget about type and learn how to read and write in images.

Stefan Claudius is the co-founder of the Cape Arcona Type Foundry in Essen, Germany and co-organizer of the Typoforum 33pt at the University of Applied Sciences, Dortmund. Claudius’ workshop will look at creating an alternative typeface for this year’s football world cup.

In addition to the workshops, Tage der Typografie offers delegates a varied choice of presentations including ‘Sansseriftypeswithmoderntypecharacter’, a lecture on the weirdness of classification of type given by Indra Kupferschmi, founder of ‘kupferschrift’.

Simone Wolf, co-founder of Typevents LLP, UK is presenting a new discipline: event design. Simone will give examples of Typevents’ daily work in organising major international type conferences, as well as giving delegates a glimpse of Typevents’ plans for the coming year.
