New 'Vocal Health' Podcast Series Informs Voice Actors How To Protect Their Voice

Voice actors know the damage that a common cold - or a bout with the flu - will have on their career. Work and income stop if they can’t properly voice scripts for clients.

But there are many additional risks to vocal health, some quite serious, warns international voice talent and coach Bettye Zoller in a new podcast series called “Vocal Health.”

The series is appearing now on VoiceOverXtra.com, the voice-over industry’s online news, education and resource center. At the web site, it is located in the VOICE ACTING/Health section.

Each podcast discusses a particular medical aspect of vocal health, including symptoms, causes, protective measures and cures.

The latest episode, number 7, discusses the problem of a build-up of phlegm in the throat. It’s not a pretty topic, but the information is essential to vocal health, including how to recognize danger signs by the color of phlegm, and how to get rid of it.

For instance, Zoller explains that phlegm originates in the lungs, not nasal passages; that various colors indicate types of sickness; and that one should never try to eliminate phlegm by taking a cough suppressant.

Earlier episodes discuss a range of topics, including how to deal with a hoarse voice, tension, one’s manner of speaking, nasal resonance, and even a “Voice Survival Guide for the Holidays.”

About the Author

The owner of VoicesVoices - a voice-over educational services firm and recording studio based in Dallas - Zoller is a voice-over and speech coach, acting coach, and university educator who also presents voice-over and studio singer workshops nationwide. With over 30 years of experience, she is the recipient of Clio, ADDY, Golden Radio and Audie awards.

She is also currently the Feagin Guest Artist Professor in the Theatre Division at Tulsa University.

Her voice-over coaching schedule takes her to Germany and Austria in December.
